The Game Awards 2022 dishes out awards for a variety of categories. You've got your esports categories, narrative categories, and then the coveted Game of the Year award. In the midst of all the award madness, Geoff Keighley announced the winner for Best Multiplayer Game. With nominees such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, MultiVersus, and Overwatch 2, it was Splatoon 3 who prevailed at The Game Awards 2022.

Gamers often equate multiplayer games with esports titles. This is true in a lot of cases, like with Valorant, League of Legends, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, and Overwatch 2. The latter duo of games were on the bill for Best Multiplayer Game at The Game Awards 2022.

Neither of them were the victor, however. The same can be said for MultiVersus, which won Best Fighting Game, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge. Instead, the paint-splattering Nintendo Switch title known as Splatoon 3 won the award.

Splatoon 3 arrived on September 9, 2022 and sold nearly 8 million copies in its first month. Its competitive multiplayer mode is known as Turf War. Two teams of four try to cover the map with their ink color. Whichever team has colored more of the map before the match reaches its time limit is the winner.

Many perhaps expected Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 or Overwatch 2 to win the award, but Splatoon 3 came out on top at The Game Awards 2022. It has a surprisingly large and dedicated esports scene with high school and collegiate competitions. The second title in the Splatoon franchise was even included as a part of ESL Play.
