Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (Trailer, release date, cast, and more)

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes sends the franchise centuries into the future for a look at how some of the apes rule with an iron fist.

In this writer's opinion, the Planet of the Apes is one of the greatest movie franchises of all time. And that makes it exciting to see yet another sequel on the horizon, in the form of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Long gone are the days of Charlton Heston falling to his knees at the sight of a desecrated Statue of Liberty. Now, we're in the much grittier reboot of the series, finding ourselves in the distant future of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

Here's everything you need to know about its cast, when it takes place, and when you can watch it:

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes was originally scheduled for a May 24, 2024 release date. To avoid competition with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Garfield Movie over Memorial Day Weekend in the United States, filmmakers moved the date up.

You'll be able to kick off summer a bit early with this release. In theaters only upon arrival, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is ready for your eyes on May 10. So, get your tickets and pre-purchase your popcorn for this one.

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes trailer

20th Century Studios revealed a teaser trailer for the movie on November 2, 2023. A couple of months later, during the 2024 Super Bowl on February 11, the movie's second trailer arrived with more of the film's tale to tell.

The trailer features a voiceover that explains the greatness humanity once showcased. From being able to fly to speaking to each other across oceans, that is no more and it is the apes' turn. And while some apes look to rule and hunt humans, others wish to learn from them and work together to strengthen their world.

Story details

Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is set 300 after 2017's War for the Planet of the Apes. Apes have formed civilizations and kingdoms, while humans are feral. This is much like the premise of the original Planet of the Apes film in 1968.

A young ape sympathizes with humanity, and wants to use what they once knew as a means of education rather than power. He goes on a journey that uncovers the true past of the world that came before him and makes him question right from wrong.

After Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox, the future of the Planet of the Apes was up the air. Thankfully, they have stated this is the start of a new trilogy that builds on the legacy of the first three reboot films.
