A recent datamine revealed possible research where players can choose between Mega Mewtwo X and Y.
A Pokémon GO datamine shared on the PokeMiners Discord server has revealed new research buttons featuring Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y, giving players a fresh hint at when these long-awaited Megas could finally arrive in the game.
Despite being the Mega forms of a Generation I legendary Pokémon, GO fans are still hopeful that someday, they’ll get a chance at adding either Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y to their Pokédexes.
It’s worth noting that the assets of these Megas already arrived in the game earlier this year, together with Zeraora and Flamigo, in which the former will make its debut at GO Fest 2026.
The introduction of Mega Mewtwo assets coincides with GO Fest 2026, where Mewtwo will become available in five-star raids.
Keep in mind that the information below comes from a datamine, meaning it is not officially confirmed. Developers can still change, adjust, or remove these details before they are released in-game.
Mega Mewtwo X and Y Pokémon GO research buttons explained

As of writing, the only information we have about these research buttons is that one of them features an image of Mega Mewtwo X and the other one has Mega Mewtwo Y. PokeMiners also included the potential Pokémon GO sprites of these Pokémon.
The research buttons strongly suggest that a future event, possibly months away, will let players complete a Special or Timed Research that ultimately offers a choice between Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y.
Such mechanics could become similar to August 2025’s Gigantamax Journey Timed research, where players can choose one between the Gigantamax forms of Rillaboom, Cinderace, and Inteleon.
In the case of Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y, choosing one will likely grant players the specific Mega Energy needed to Mega Evolve Mewtwo into their selected form.
Should players prepare for Mega Mewtwo now?
Since the assets of Mega Mewtwo X and Y are already in the game, it’s safe to say that their Pokémon GO debuts are on the horizon.
The upcoming GO Fest 2026 will become a must-join event for those who don’t have a Mewtwo yet and also for those who are hoping to get a Shiny or a Hundo variant.
Mega Mewtwo X and Y are expected to instantly become S-tier raid attackers once they are released, thanks to their massive 426 Attack stat, which surpasses even top-tier powerhouses like Mega Rayquaza.
