It’s the lower-bracket final, and both teams have a great motivation to win here: sweet, sweet revenge.

Drama and intrigue make the European League of Legends esports scene especially interesting. G2 Esports may lose their status as an undefeated leader. Could they recover and avenge the team that sent them to the lower brackets? MAD Lions KOI made it from barely qualifying for this event to defeating G2 in the opening match and earning their Worlds 2024 spot. Could MDK eliminate G2 from the LEC Season Finals 2024? This win could also be a chance for revenge on Fnatic, who won over MAD Lions KOI in a super close upper-bracket final.

Match recap

The start of the series brought hope to the hearts of MDK fans. MAD Lions KOI overplayed G2 in game 1 thanks to their confident and goal-oriented approach. That was probably a good lesson for G2 on how to deal with these opponents. In the following three games, G2 Esports did not give MDK a chance to play the same cards. In one way or another, everything finished with the domination of G2 and MDK’s Nexus being destroyed.

G2 Esports won the series. Still, MAD Lions KOI played very well, and it will be interesting to follow them at the League of Legends Worlds 2024.

For G2, Fnatic is the next opponent — in the very last match of LEC Season Finals 2024.

“I’m very happy… I think we figured out [our obstacles] in game 1. Game 1 was our mistake. But like all G2 classics, we did a content game.”

BrokenBlade

Game 1

Both teams had a plan for a slow game, and both followed it for around 10 minutes. Then team fights started, and surprisingly, MDK were much better at them. They looked stubborn in their determination, while G2 could not implement their creative ideas.  Even with a good understanding of a situation and a correct approach from G2, their actions fell apart. MDK got an advantage pretty quickly and at minute 27 eliminated the opponents and destroyed their base. It’s one point for MAD Lions KOI. The dream of victory feels pretty tangible for them!

Game 2

G2 abandoned the idea of a slow start and got aggressive from the beginning of game 2. If not for some small mistakes (like a misstep by Caps on Mid), everything went well for them. They dominated the map, got kills, and destroyed turrets. MDK responded nicely as well, following the new pace, but the objectives were out of their hands. When the kills count froze for a while, G2 won a team fight and secured Baron. After a short time and another successful team fight, G2 destroyed the Nexus of MDK — making the score even in a very confident way.

Game 3

Only a couple of different LoL Champions were chosen in the draft: Lillia and Yone for MDK. Otherwise, game 3 picks and bans were identical to game 2. It looked like Lillia of Elyoya was making a difference in the beginning, but soon G2 returned to their usual route of kills and objectives. After a period of G2’s domination, MDK managed to slow down their opponents, trying to find a good response. When MDK emphasized the Dragon, G2 used the emptiness of the base and destroyed two Inhibitors. The Nexus was just a logical consequence. It’s a match point for G2 Esports.

Game 4

An even start of game 4 slowly and inevitably turned into G2 domination. They patiently accumulated power, took the map under their control, and punished every slight mistake of their opponents. MDK tried to resist this gradually growing danger. They got some kills in crucial moments, but at some point, G2 were just too strong. G2 Esports eliminated the entire MDK team, destroyed the Nexus, and won this match.

G2 and MDK in LEC Season 2024

These two teams reached the lower-bracket final quite differently. Their path up to this moment dictated general expectations and the mood of the players and the community.

G2 Esports, shaky champions

This team is the best hope of the European League of Legends community on the international scene. The fans are so used to cheering for G2 at such events as the Mid-Season Invitational that seeing the players struggling during the local season is disturbing.

G2 Esports won all three splits in 2024. But during the Summer Regular Season and Playoffs, it was hard not to notice how shaky their performance was. Only some crazy comebacks helped G2 get the title. And the LEC Season Finals 2024 started with a loss to MAD Lions KOI. After a 2-3 match, G2 were sent to the lower brackets.

Their previous match against Team BDS nicely demonstrates the state of G2's play right now. They needed to reach a 0-2 situation to get themselves together and perform a reverse sweep.

MAD Lions KOI

Not so many people expected MAD Lions KOI to reach so far. There was a moment during the LEC Summer 2024 Regular Season when the players had to save themselves from being eliminated. They won the final match against Rogue and then two tie-breakers against Rouge and Team Vitality to remain in the competition. Perhaps this challenge made MAD Lions KOI stronger.

They still couldn't repeat their Winter success, which was 2nd place, and finished the Summer split in 8th. But defeating G2 in the opening match of the LEC Season Finals? That's quite a statement!

Fnatic are waiting

MAD Lions KOI had a good chance to proceed to the grand final via the upper brackets. Fnatic stopped them in a very close five-game final. MAD Lions KOI certainly wanted a second chance against these opponents.

G2 Esports have yet not faced Fnatic in the Season Finals. But that team still is their main opponent in the European esports scene. They must reach the grand final and show who is the best there!

The next step for the top 3 LEC teams is the 2024 World Championship. For all League of Legends news and updates, stick around on esports.gg.
