The defending LoL World Champions, T1, had the last chance to qualify for the Worlds 2024 event. Coul KT Rolster ruin the hopes and dreams of T1 fans?

As one of the main League of Legends competitive regions, South Korea has four slots at the World Championship 2024. One is for the MSI 2024 winner, Gen.G, and it’s not too bad for T1 not to get it. One is for the LCK Summer 2024 winner — and it’s a moment when the fans’ anxiety started to grow, as T1 were defeated and stopped by HLE. One more is for the LCK Regional Finals 2024 winners… The fans are on the verge of desperation, as DK won that chaotic match against T1.

The only remaining chance was the 2nd place at the LCK Regional Finals 2024. Not only did T1 fans follow this match, but the whole LoL community was also interested in the outcome. A League of Legends World Championship without T1? What KT Rolster have up their sleeves for such an occasion?

Match recap

The lower final between T1 and KT Rolster at the LCK Regional Finals 2024 was so back-and-forth! T1 went from full domination in game 1 to the inability to follow the champion development pace of DK in game 4.

When the pressure became almost unbearable, T1 demonstrated the might of their experience. In game 5, they prioritized clever structure destruction (Faker on Corki) and gold accumulation. When DK enjoyed early kills, their opponent suddenly got too tanky to contest them. This strategy brought T1 the win and the 4th LCK spot at the LoL Worlds 2024 event.

“Against Dplus, I felt so much pressure, an extreme pressure to not lose. And today, I think, I just cooled everything down, and I really allowed myself to focus and concentrate on the game today”

Zeus

“We were in a situation when we might not be able to make it to Worlds. Being able to be given that chance, I’m just really grateful, and I want to make sure that we make the most out of it. [...] As a competitor at Worlds, I feel like it was such a rough journey, but I feel it’s going to be a very good experience for us. And for the fans who kept supporting us up until this point, for the fans who will be supporting us during the Worlds run, thank you so much.”

Game 1

T1 won it in such a dominant way! The picks of KT players did not work properly, and T1 had a 6k gold advantage at just minute 15. Ziggs of Gumayusi was an unstoppable killing machine, and KT could do nothing about that. T1 effectively destroyed the turrets, secured Baron, and eliminated KT Roster from Game 1.

Game 2

KT looked like a totally different team in Game 2! They got a few kills in the beginning and worked on their gold advantage. T1 tried to respond, and they started a successful team fight for this. But at some point, Pyosik on his Skarner stole a Dragon — this was a moment when everything fell apart for T1. They totally lost a fight near Baron and gave KT this objective for free. Skarner got super tanky, while T1 champions just couldn’t deal enough damage.

A couple of more team fights, and KT took the telecom war to the next game, making the match score event.

Game 3

Both teams started Game 3 rather slowly, and this careful champion development worked much better for T1. They grew their power with a variety of objectives to the point when DK could do nothing about their damage. Taliyah and Camile were great picks! T1 reached the match point.

Game 4

It was a slow game in the beginning, and then the teams got highly offensive, which turned out to be a better decision for DK. Bdd on Yone looked scary, and all the other DK champions grew so much power. T1 were losing one fight after another. After a risky move around a Dragon, they lost everyone — the match score gap was gone. DK were ready to fight for the LoL Worlds 2024 qualification!

Game 5

On the one hand, DK got a kill advantage in this game pretty early. But on the other one, the gold was on the T1 side. When most players were busy with fights, Faker with his Corki destroyed many turrets.

The gold brought T1 items and power. At some point, one good team fight was enough for T1 to take control and then never turn back. The snowballing effect inevitably led to the Nexus being destroyed. T1 did it! They won this match, so they go to the League of Legends World Championship 2024.

Weight of the Worlds

One thing was pretty much certain about the T1 vs KT match — the community’s and personal expectations could be a heavy burden for T1.

This LoL team is legendary. Being the World Champions 2023 is just a tip of the iceberg. Beyond that title, you’ll find an amazing competitive legacy. And these successes are not history yet. T1 won the Esports World Cup 2024 just a couple of months ago. Everyone sees them as one of the favorites at the Worlds 2024 event. Could this be too much of a weight?

The hints of some issues started some time ago, with Faker showing emotional instability. Then, the team went through difficulties in their results, till this point.

KT Rolster are also strong players, and not everything in this match depended on T1. They are 5th in both LCK splits in 2024, which is a lot, considering the power of this League of Legends region. They won the LCK Regional Finals 2023. And now, KT Roster enjoys the privilege of being an underdog in their match against T1. Just reaching so far is great. There is no pressure of letting down the whole world by losing this low final.

The KT players could’t be too careless, though. The weight of the Worlds was affecting them too. Qualifying for the World Championship is an achievement no one wants to miss — regardless of the opponents in this way.
