The Apex Games are becoming a family affair.

Could Horizon’s son be joining the Apex Games in the near future? The trailer for Season 20 of Apex Legends, as well as earlier in-game hints, may very well tease to Newton Somer's being added to the Apex Games. These hints may also mean a deeper dive into Horizon for future Apex Legends lore. Here's everything we know about Horizon's son!

What's Horizon's lore and who is her son?

If you’re not familiar with the lore behind one of the most popular Legends in Apex, we’ll bring you up to speed.

Horizon, AKA Dr. Mary Somers, is an astrophysicist who lived and worked about a century before the Apex Games. She lived on Olympus with her beloved son Newton. When the Outlands experienced a catastrophic energy crisis, Horizon worked with her assistant, Dr. Ashleigh Reid, to solve it. The pair discovered branthium, an element that could save the Outlands from their crisis. However, branthium proved to be a difficult resource to harvest, as it can only be found on the outer parts of a black hole.

Before an attempt to gather branthium, Horizon promised her son that she would be back. However, when she went out to harvest the element, she was betrayed by Dr. Reid, and set adrift near the black hole to die. If that name isn’t familiar, you may recognize her better as Ash, the simulacrum who joined the Apex Games in Season 11. After being betrayed, Horizon managed to use her wits and her N.E.W.T. drone to return to the planet Psamathe.

When Horizon returned she discovered that time passed differently near the black hole. She had been away for 87 years and everyone she knew, including her son, had long since died (according to the official story).

Horizon's son, Newton Somers

From lore both in-game and off, there has been a small amount of information about the life of Newton Somers. The most significant piece of information is that Newton worked on Project Iris, which created Pathfinder.

However, when all the members of that Project were killed (betrayed by Dr. Reid, of course), Newton wasn’t there. In fact, he had been assumed dead and never found. In one 'Stories from the Outlands' episode, Ash says “I know what happened to Newton” without any further explanation.

Horizon's humming in Season 19

This lore all dropped around Season 10, so it’s prime time for Horizon to continue her story. In fact, some in-game teasers have already been dropped to hint at more of Horizon’s story. In Season 19, players started to notice that Horizon hums a lullaby when stationary for long enough. This lullaby may seem a little similar to the one used by the Huntress of Dead by Daylight fame, but we're sure Horizon has less murderous intent.

While this may seem like a small development, the teaser alongside her son’s voice at the end of the Season 20 trailer seems to point towards more future lore surrounding Horizon.

TL:DR?

Here are the basic points that hint towards more Horizon lore involving her son:

  • Horizon’s promise to reunite with her son was highlighted in the Season 20 trailer
  • Newton was never found after being presumed dead, leaving the possibility for him still be alive (stranger things have happened in the Outlands)
  • Horizon has been humming a lullaby in Season 19, implying that she’s thinking of her son
  • Ash hinted in Season 10 that she knew what happened to Newton, but never elaborated

With the Revenant and Loba lore (hopefully) wrapped up with the conclusion of Kill Code, more love can be given lore-wise to the other Legends. Horizon has one of the most interesting backstories of any of the Legends. It’s definitely exciting to see hints towards continuing her story this season.
