Sage is receiving a small in-game model update to better reflect her evolving lore. Here’s what’s happening to her.

The update to the Sage in-game model may be subtle, but it’s happening. Our favorite healer is receiving her first update since her 2020 release, bringing her appearance in line with the evolving VALORANT story. To understand why this change matters, let’s first dive into the lore.

Is Sage dying in the VALORANT lore?

Wei Ling Ying, better known as Sage, is a natural leader and the only agent capable of resurrecting others. However, helping others comes at a cost, as her powers are slowly taking a toll on her. After years of pushing herself too far, Sage is beginning to show clear signs of fatigue. In the 2026 season cinematic, we see her in a weakened state after resurrecting Killjoy.

She appears inside a green container as Viper walks by and places a hand on it, visibly filled with sadness and regret. The two have known each other since before the days of the PROTOCOL, suggesting a deep bond and making Sage’s condition all the more painful for Viper to witness.

In the Miks agent trailer, we see Sage struggling with the crystallization as she gazes at herself in the mirror. The trailer hints that the new agent may be able to help her manage it with his healing powers. By the end, she appears a bit more at ease, smiling at Miks and the other agents.

Sage’s in-game model update

There’s no confirmation that Sage is dying, but it’s clear she is suffering from constantly putting others before her own health. To follow the lore and bring a closer reflection of what is happening in the story, Riot Games is updating Sage’s in-game model.

In Sage’s new model, we can see crystallization spreading to her face and hands, as her body becomes severely affected by her resurrection powers. Her icon will also be updated, featuring a small crystallization mark on her left cheek. These model changes won’t affect her gameplay in any way, but they mark an interesting move by Riot Games, as the developers aim to better align their agents’ appearances with the evolving lore.

Sage was released in the Beta alongside Brimstone, Viper, Omen, Cypher, Sova, Phoenix, Raze, Breach, and Jett back in June 2020.

Release date

You can see Sage’s in-game model updates starting March 18. While there’s still no confirmation that other agents will receive similar in-game model updates in the future, this is clearly an effort by Riot Games to bring the lore closer to both the agents and the in-game environment.

These small changes also arrive alongside UI updates, the new agent Miks, a new game mode, and many more surprises you can check out in the VALORANT patch 16.05 notes.
