The “nothing burger” of a statement from Twitch CEO Dan Clancy addressing the Emiru TwitchCon incident did not hit the mark.

Dan Clancy, CEO of Twitch, released an official statement following the harassment incident that involved popular streamer and content creator Emily Beth "Emiru" Schunk at TwitchCon 2025. The streaming community and the general public on Twitch were not satisfied with his words, though. They called it a "nothing burger," since no immediate action is going to be taken. Others are alleging that the statement was mostly AI-generated, further earning the ire of the public.

Twitch CEO responds to Emiru's TwitchCon assault

The statement was lengthy. First, Clancy apologized for his remarks and response immediately after Emiru got assaulted at TwitchCon. The X post garnered over 2 million views in just under 12 hours.

"First, I want to be upfront and take accountability for the security incident that occurred during Emiru’s Meet and Greet. It shouldn’t have happened and we take that very seriously. We failed, both in allowing it to occur, and in our response following," wrote Clancy. "We mismanaged our communications about the incident, and that includes the comments I made. I apologize to Emiru for all that took place."

He is referring to his remarks on an interview, which downplayed the situation and implied it was Emiru's fault for not regulating her community, and the false information that the official Twitch account propagated in regards to the situation.

What followed was three paragraphs of, as the community put it, a "nothing burger." Clancy promised to "review" and "analyze" security, production, and venue staff, but no direct action of any form was mentioned in the statement.

Twitch community on Clancy's statement

Naturally, the statement was not well received by streamers and the community alike. This is primarily because Clancy and the Twitch team still have not promised any actions.

Many are also calling for him to step down from his position as CEO. Content creator Kenneth Charles "CinnamonToastKen" Morrison mocked the statement - "'We realized our event was trash after the fact even though our community has been telling us for years, but maybe well think about it some and fix it, idk.'"

Legal content creator Andrew "Legal Mindset" Esquire called it an "empty corporate statement which only reveals that Twitch is anticipating legal action from Emiru, which is entirely justified."

TwitchCon 2025 threw away gifts for VTubers

Following the assault situation involving Emiru, many TwitchCon attendees and streamer fans are outraged at the platform. It was also not the only sign of subpar handling from Twitch's side.

Reportedly, gifts meant for VTubers were thrown away by staff and never reached the talents themselves. Popular VTubers like Ironmouse, Henya the Genius, Kuro, and Phoebe Chan are only some of the affected who spoke out.
