While the character himself plays well in Street Fighter 6 matches, Alex’s story in Arcade Mode has been controversial. The community’s backlash has led to dialogue adjustments, but the twist involving marriage and a child remains unchanged.

The development team of Street Fighter 6 is very cautious with changes to the mechanics, aiming to keep the game great and only slightly refresh the power balance. Their storytelling decisions turned out to be much more controversial — specifically within the cultural differences between Japanese and Western audiences.

Alex and Patricia in SF6: What’s the problem?

If you just started your Street Fighter journey, you may be confused with the Alex and Patricia controversy. The community has plenty of seasoned players who clearly remember characters’ backstories from previous installments. The direction for Alex’s story in the SF6 arcade mode is deeply unsettling for many people.

  • Alex was raised by Tom. This man is the father of Patricia. As a young disciple, Alex was very close to the daughter of his mentor. They had a siblings dynamic in Street Fighter 3.
  • In Street Fighter 6, Alex has a romantic relationship with Patricia. The game shows them as married with a newborn child.
  • SF6 also adds that Tom is a biological cousin of Alex’s late mother, making Alex and Patricia second cousins. Basically, Alex marries his second cousin and they have a baby.

Japanese people see it differently

The Western fighting game community (FGC) reacted much more emotionally than Japanese players. In fact, the Alex and Patricia story is considered just alright in Japan. Marrying a second cousin is legal there, while still not common.

Moreover, the Japanese text describes Tom as someone who has raised or trained Alex, which is much more ambiguous than the English “adoptive father.”

SF6 director apologizes and promises to fix the story

On March 26, the Street Fighter 6 director, Takayuki Nakayama, published an apology for the confusion. He promised to adjust some text passages in Alex’s arcade story.

The adjustments don’t change much, but they may create different vibes around Alex and Patricia.

  • The text avoids the terms “adoptive father” or “little sister” and replaces them with more ambiguous Japanese equivalents.
  • The new short story explains that Alex and Patricia lived apart for a long time after being together as children. This may help reduce the impression that they have a sibling-like relationship.

Reportedly, Alex and Patricia will still remain blood-related in SF6, so it’s unclear if the story changes can really fix the problem. Nakayama also gave a vague timeline for the story revision, describing it as happening in the “near future.”

Meanwhile, Alex is quite popular as an actual playable character, as you can face him quite frequently in Ranked and in the Battle Hub. The first big esports tournament after the Alex update happens at DreamHack Birmingham 2026, and it may feature the grappler in some matches.
