Overwatch 2 Hanzo Easter eggs: Hanamura map details

Hanamura is an Assault map in Overwatch 2 that's accessible through either the Arcade rotation or custom games. It was also once the home of Hanzo and Genji Shimada. In the Dragons cinematic, the two brothers confronted each other there after 10 years of being apart. This led to a battle where Genji dodged Hanzo's arrows. One of these arrows is located just outside of the castle.

Hanzo's arrows and Genji's shuriken

In the Dragons cinematic, Hanzo also shot an arrow that ended up on the ground. When players enter Hanamura, they can actually see the impact of this shot on the wooden floors. Don't forget about Genji's shuriken. These are peppered inside of the Shimada castle.

Hanzo's sword in Overwatch 2

Another interesting Hanzo reference is the sword in Hanamura. This once belonged to the archer, who vowed to never wield it again. Hanzo's "As good as I am with a bow, I promise you — I was better with a sword" voice line acknowledges this as well.

When Genji and Hanzo's father passed away, the latter had to lead the Shimada clan. The pressure escalated to a confrontation between him and Genji, and it resulted in Genji's supposed death. Devastated, Hanzo abandoned the clan, discarded his sword, and sought to redeem himself.

Overwatch 2 Hanzo references explained

In terms of more light-hearted Hanzo references, the character has a bunch of cool voice lines. For example, his "I choose you, spirit dragon" voice line is reminiscent of a phrase said by Ash Ketchum from the Pokémon anime. Hanzo also has the "You are already dead" voice line that references Fist of the North Star's Kenshirō.

There's even a tribute to Bon Jovi in Hanzo's Valentine's Day voice line! It goes, "Shot through the heart. And I'm to blame." This voice line was obtainable during the 2023 Ultimate Valentine event that featured Cupid Hanzo and Loverwatch.

More Easter eggs are heard in the "Flow like water" and "From one thing, know 10,000 things" voice lines. These are quotes from the "The Book of Five Rings" text. This text was written by Miyamoto Musashi, who was a Japanese swordsman.

As for additional Hanzo details in Overwatch 2, he has matching sprays with Genji. For instance, these include the yin-yang one, the Shimada brothers eating ramen, and the Lunar New Year sprays that feature their dragons.

The brothers also have voice lines that refer to the Dragons cinematic. Hanzo says, "Real life is not like the stories our father told us." Meanwhile, Genji goes, "I have accepted what I am."
