Week 6 opening matches are postponed due to the typhoon.

To the dismay of fans, matches for the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang Professional League Philippines (MPL PH) Season 16 Week 6 Day 1 are postponed. According to the official statement, this is due to safety concerns caused by Tropical Storm Opong.

The league cited the advisory from PAGASA and its own safety team’s recommendation as the basis for the decision. With that said, only Day 1 matches are postponed for Week 6. Matches for the other two days of the week will proceed as planned.

MPL Philippines postponed Week 6 opener due to safety concerns

Severe Tropical Storm Opong (international name: Bualoi) has strengthened over the Philippine Sea. The forecasts warn of potential landfall in the Bicol region by Sept. 26, 2025. As expected, nearby regions might also be affected by the storm. It also just so happens that the day marks the opening of MPL PH Season 16 Week 6.

Following the weather forecast, MPL Philippines issued a statement, stating that Week 6 Day 1 is postponed.

“The decision is in line with the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA)'s advisory and our Safety Team's recommendation. The league prioritizes the health and safety of our teams, staff, and fans. A separate announcement will be released soon detailing the rescheduled matches and ticketing.”

While the first day is postponed, the committee states that Matches scheduled for Sept. 27 and 28 will proceed. However, the league will be monitoring the weather conditions and prioritizing the safety of everyone involved in the event.

Community reacts to postponed MPL PH Season 16 Week 6 opener

The post from MPL Philippines sparked a wave of reactions from the community. Some fans argued that the matches can be held in an online-only format. They believe that playing in their respective boot camps would allow the season to stay on schedule and keep audiences engaged.

However, not all are convinced it’s a safe solution. There are fans who pointed out that Typhoon Opong may also bring other issues like power outages or internet disruptions. These fans do have a point. One of the common issues back when MPL Philippines followed an online-only format was constant technical pauses due to unstable connections. Hosting a tournament online in the middle of a storm would only make these problems worse.

In the end, while opinions differ on how the postponement should have been handled, the consensus remains that safety comes first. Whether on-site or online, no match is worth risking the well-being of players, staff, or fans. With Typhoon Opong threatening to disrupt both infrastructure and daily life, the best course of action is for everyone to prioritize safety and stay informed through official advisories.
