"Investing in high quality research allows us to be guided by valuable data and insights, which will ultimately help us support our patrons, communities, and industry."

BetMGM and MGM Resorts International have announced a commitment of $1 million to responsible gaming initiatives.

BetMGM and MGM Resorts to support responsible gaming

On Feb. 26, BetMGM and MGM Resorts International announced an expanded commitment of $1 million to responsible gaming initiatives. These initiatives will pertain to research, public awareness, community partnerships, and employee engagement. The three-year initiative will support research on sports wagering and player behavior. It will also support peer-reviewed studies to develop best practices.

According to the official announcement, MGM Resorts and BetMGM committed $450,000 to the International Center for Responsible Gaming (ICRG). This part of the funding will support a new research initiative on sports wagering and player behavior. The research will examine decision-making and risk patterns across different populations as well.

“This contribution will support independent, peer-reviewed research aimed at developing best practices and strengthening long-term industry sustainability,” the announcement added.

Problem Gambling Awareness Month

“As sports betting continues to grow, so must our understanding of its impact on our guests and customers,” Stephen Martino, the senior vice president and chief compliance officer at MGM Resorts, said. “Investing in high quality research allows us to be guided by valuable data and insights, which will ultimately help us support our patrons, communities, and industry.”

Rhea Loney, the chief compliance officer at BetMGM, weighed in on this as well. Loney acknowledged how the announcement arrived ahead of Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM), too.

A nationwide grassroots campaign, PGAM takes place every March. The campaign aims to increase public awareness of problem gambling and promote prevention, treatment, and recovery services. It also encourages healthcare providers to screen clients for problem gambling.

As casinos, online casinos, and esports betting platforms continue to grow, the campaign underscores the importance of responsible practices.

“Problem Gambling Awareness Month is an important reminder of our year-round responsibility to assist and empower our players,” Loney said. “We prioritize player protection by investing in education, tools, collaboration, and meaningful support resources. Our commitment remains clear: to help every player make informed decisions and enjoy our products safely.”
