GEN vs TES: Match recap
Game 1 and 2 demonstrated the power of Gen.G Esports. The Korean team won quite confidently, having early advantages and powerful development — up to destroying the Nexus. At some point, it even felt like TES is already down to the lower brackets.
Game 3 started differently. It was Top Esports who earned an early advantage. They started winning team fights from the very beginning, and the more Gen.G Esports tried to compensate for the Gold and Kill differences, the bigger it grew.
This newly obtained might of Top Esports became more obvious in game four. The Chinese team was simply unstoppable! And they acted thoroughly — even in destroying the opponents’ base; one Inhibitor after another. Gen.G Esports had a chance at some point, but TES stole a dragon and did not let that happen.
Game 5 was rather slow in the beginning, in terms of kills on both teams. Somehow, Gen.G benefited from this more. Top Esports had two more kills, but their opponents gained substantially more Gold. The action got wilder when TES stole a Dragon but then GEN eliminated the whole opposing team. The money difference grew bigger, and Gen.G did not let this opportunity skip through their fingers.
A small chance for Top Esports appeared around their Baron fight. They killed one Gen.G player and were close to finishing Baron. But then, they lost a five vs four fight — and simply did not recover.
Gen.G won this amazing match and proceeded to the MSI 2024 Upper Brackets Final.
Their opponent will be determined in the Semi-Final T1 vs Bilibili Gaming on May 12.
Post-Match interview
A short interview with Kiin happened right after the match. Let’s highlight what Gen.G’s top laner said.
First, Kiin explained how the team feels about coming from 2:0 to 2:2.
“We were actually very used to five-game matches thanks to the LCK Playoffs, so we were ready for it.”
The player mentioned the lane-swap meta in LoL while talking about the dominance of K'Sante as a top-lane LoL Champion at the MSI 2024.
“Because of the lane swap meta, Top Champions cannot really scale well. People are opting in for safe, kind of stable Champions, which can just do a decent job.”

Kiin took Ryze at some point in the match, and it’s interesting to know if there is a spot for this Champion in the current meta.
“Ryze is a classic counter-pick against Rumble, so I go for it in such a matchup.”
While talking about the next opponent of Genji Esports, Kiin shared his opinion on two top laners: Zeus from T1 and Bin from BLG.
“T1 prefers Zeus on a carry side, aggressive, with long-range picks. He is like a sharp blade of T1. Bin is also good at aggressive picks with long-range Champions. But now, he plays a lot of supportive roles.”
A bit earlier, esports.gg had a chance to chat with JackyLove from Top Esports. Please, check out this exclusive interview.

Path to the UB Semi-Final
The teams have pretty different experiences at the LoL MSI 2024. One made it through the initial Play-In Stage. Another started directly from the Playoffs of the Bracket Stage.
Top Esports
This Chinese team got the 2nd LPL seed and started playing in Play-In. Top Esports was seeded to Group B: with LOUD, Fnatic, and GAM Esports.
It took the Chinese players only two matches to qualify to the Bracket Stage. Top Esports confidently defeated LOUD, and then, with extreme difficulties in game 2, they won over Fnatic.
In the Upper Bracket Quarterfinals of the MSI 2024 Bracket Stage, Top Esports defeated Team Liquid from North America — with a confident 3:0.
Gen.G Esports
These players come from Korea — Gen.G Esports won LCK Spring 2024 and qualified directly to the Main Stage of the League of Legends MSI 2024.
The Korean players faced Fnatic in the Upper Bracket Quarterfinals, and that did not go well for the European team. Fnatic still looked pretty good, though.
The other Upper Brackets Semi-Final is between T1 and Bilibili Gaming. For everything interesting and important from the LoL Mid-Season Invitational 2025, stick around on esports.gg!
