And the game is actually smaller is size than its predecessor.

There are very few video games that actually reflect the realities of the real world. Microsoft’s Flight Simulator is one such game that closely mimics the terrain and distances of the world. First released in 2020, Microsoft is planning for a 2024 version that will come out later this year. This year there are additional features that let you get out of the plane, walk around, climb mountains and much more.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: You can come out of the plane

Moving out of the plane would be a complete game changer for a video game that has redefined the gaming experience. Flight Simulator uses a combination of recreation of plane interiors coupled with close integration with Bing maps that make the entire experience surreal. The precise plane interiors are possible due to documentation from the company’s manufacturing papers, CAD drawings, and laser scans.

The final product is something that lets you experience going to a place that you will probably never go to in real life. And if you have been to that city before, it will be a nostalgic experience as you touch down at the airport. In the 2024 version, you can also get out of the plane and walk around - although we’re eagerly waiting to see how that pans out.

In an interview with PCgamer’s Andy Edser, Head of Microsoft Simulator at Microsoft, Jorg Neumann said players would be able to explore the entire world on foot.

"You can now exit the plane, walk around, in 2024. You can literally walk your favorite mountain path to your favorite hut in the mountains. Sit on the lake. See the sunset.”

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 has an even more in-depth recreation of the real world. It allows planes to land on ships and the game has this data because every ship sends a transponder signal. It also has much better recreation of airports, including every glider airport. The game will have every oil rig on the planet.

“This is all 2024 talk—we made every airport look much better. We added every glider airport. We added every oil rig. We added every lighthouse. It feels like whatever comes to your mind you can actually do now, if you embrace the cloud.”

How big is Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024?

Despite the improvement in detail and more features, Microsoft Flight Simulator will not be as big as its predecessor. This is because the game will offload a lot of functionality to the cloud, and will require active internet connectivity to ensure a seamless experience.

"In 2020, the initial install is 130 GB. Then we have 17 world updates. If you calculate it up, we're at 500 GB. And then there are 5,000 add ons that people have made, which I think are two terabytes.ll.

So for Flight Simulator 2024, we've changed all that. We basically went for a thin client architecture, and we're not done yet. We're shipping in November, but we think we're going to be… I'd say 50 GB or less, but with tons more data, because we are offloading more to the cloud."

The new game will be less than 50 GB in size, as per Jorg Neumann, which is a significant achievement considering everything new that is being added to the game.

When does Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 release?

Microsoft Flight Simulator releases on November 19, 2024. The game will release on Xbox and PC. It is an Xbox-exclusive game.

"I'm very curious to see where people fly, because we improved the world so much in 2024 that it's worth revisiting, and there's some features we haven't talked about yet that I think are going to make that fascinating."
