“Whether it’s individuals, companies, bigger organizations, sponsors, or supporters, we’re really just on the come up from here, and after this tournament, I really hope a lot more other companies can see this is a big thing and there’ll be more tournaments.”

The Milk Cup Finals event is a Fortnite esports tournament for women. Created by Gonna Need Milk, Women of the eRena (WOTE), ThePeachCobbler, and Raidiant, this inaugural event also boasts a $250,000 prize pool. One of the top competitors who made it to the event is wkay from Repulse Gaming. Although wkay is now a solo player among a majority of trios in this competition, she's not alone outside of the game. This is her story.

wkay enters The Milk Cup Finals as a solo player

Hailing from Michigan and skipping her homecoming on Oct. 5 for The Milk Cup Finals, wkay is a solo player who's ready to duke it out and take the gold. She'll be going against the odds since her two other teammates are sick. However, in her interview with esports.gg, wkay revealed that she's ready to take on the challenge — especially when it comes to the endgame.

"My favorite part of tournaments is endgame," she said. "I'm really good at it. I love it. I just like everyone all in one spot and just rotating, getting killed, just playing.

"You just gotta watch out for people playing Storm. People will play Storm early, so just gotta make sure I'm staying on one level, which is the ground level, middle level, or high ground.

"But other than that, my strat is — I like to play lower, and I'm very good with my whereabouts. I know what everyone's pretty much doing."

The impact of the Fortnite esports community

In addition to having great map awareness, wkay has a lot of experience. She has been playing Fortnite since its inception. However, she didn't quite love the game at first. Instead, she dismissed it after being introduced to it in college. After trying it on mobile, she started enjoying it. Before long, a few years passed, and in 2021, she transitioned from playing on her phone to competing on PC.

"I just kept getting better because I played it every day," wkay continued. "And then next year, a year or two later, I'm playing comp. I've been playing for almost seven years."

Her interest in competitive Fortnite soon led her to joining a Discord group. This community made it easier to find scrims for practice. She said that scrims are always enjoyable whether it's solo, duo, or trio squads. Additionally, even people on the football team at her school expressed interest in getting into Fortnite esports after learning about her accomplishments and seeing her play the game at a competitive level.

Despite going into The Milk Cup Finals as a solo player, wkay revealed that she's very excited to see the support of everyone in person.

"It means a lot. I'm very excited. Whether it's individuals, companies, bigger organizations, sponsors, or supporters, we're really just on the come up from here, and after this tournament, I really hope a lot more other companies can see this is a big thing and there'll be more tournaments," wkay said.

That's all for now. The Milk Cup will crown its first-ever champion or champions on Oct. 5. Stick around on esports.gg for more interviews, news, and updates!
