Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Prelude prequel will arrive in the US via Yen Press, as announced at Anime NYC 2025.
Exciting news for Frieren fans! Yen Press will publish the prequel, Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Prelude, in North America. The publisher has brought English editions of hits like Lord of Mysteries, The Summer Hikaru Died, and Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint to readers.

Yen Press is adapting Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Prelude into English after its original release in Japan on April 17, 2024. The prequel explores events that take place before the main storyline of one of Crunchyroll’s most beloved and award-winning anime series.
The prequel will deepen the backstory of the central trio while also giving greater insight into supporting characters Kanne and Lawine. They were introduced during the First-Class Mage Exam Arc.
"After the legendary elf mage Frieren is forced to confront the cruel passage of time, she sets out on a journey to fulfil the last wishes of her friends and get to know the world a little better. Under the supervision of Kanehito Yamada, writer of the original manga, come five original short stories. Join Frieren, Fern, Stark, Lawine, Kanne, and Aura in brand new adventures," Yen Press stated.

When is the novel coming out?
The publisher has not announced an official release date for the novel. However, fans can look forward to Frieren returning to screens next year with the release of Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End Season 2, scheduled for January 2026.
Keiichiro Saito will not lead the second season, but will assume the supervising role. Tomoya Kitagawa will lead the second season. Fans can grab the Blu-ray version this October. The first season aired from September 2023 to March 2024 on Crunchyroll and has 28 episodes.
