Mobile Suit Gundam will finally have its first live-action. For mecha and sci-fi fans, this is the moment you’ve waiting for.
The iconic mecha and sci-fi anime from 1979, Mobile Suit Gundam, is having its first live-action produced by Bandai Namco Filmworks and Legendary Entertainment. The latter one was responsible for the recent Dune movies and other popular films like Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Pokémon Detective Pikachu, and Interstellar.
A blockbuster in the anime industry
If you were born after the 90s, it's normal that you don't know Mobile Suit Gundam. This anime became part of many adolescents' lives back then. It is known as the first anime to establish the “real robot anime” genre. It was created and directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino, a major figure within the mecha anime community.
The anime was a huge success due to the introduction of a new concept where robots were treated as military hardware rather than superpowered, invincible weapons. The anime is known for its political and military themes, exploring war, science, and technology in a way that few studios did back then.
As a long-running series, Mobile Suit Gundam has had 25 anime series, 34 movies, 27 OVAs, streaming content, event-exclusive footage, TV specials, and many other things. The franchise generates over $900 million annually.
