The New York Subliners become the fourth unique team to win a Major in the 2024 season.
This weekend, the Call of Duty League (CDL) concluded its season's final Major in Burbank, CA. Although no fans were in attendance at CDL Major 4, the competition was heated. The Major 3 Champs OpTic Texas exited the tournament early while an unexpected run by the Los Angeles Guerillas saw them reach Championship Sunday. However, it all came down to the Grand Finals between the New York Subliners and Atlanta Faze. Here's how the weekend shook out.
The tale of the tape: New York Subliners vs. Atlanta FaZe
CDL Major 4 was full of surprises. Heading into the weekend, many had already penciled the Atlanta FaZe into the Grand Finals alongside the Toronto Ultra. An unlikely story would play out with the New York Subliners, who were recently acquired by Cloud9, rebounding from a 3-0 loss to Atlanta FaZe in the winners bracket and making it to the Grand Finals.
Along the way, the Subliners sent home the Minnesota ROKKR, Vegas Legion, Los Angeles Thieves, and Toronto Ultra, setting up a redemption match with the Atlanta FaZe. On the winners side, the Major 2 Champions Atlanta FaZe sent the Seattle Surge and Los Angeles Guerillas to the losers bracket en route to Championship Sunday.
The Subliners shock Atlanta FaZe, win CDL Major 4 in a gripping Grand Final
Despite a lackluster season, the reigning Call of Duty World Champions rounded into form at the right time, just two weeks from the 2024 World Championship. The Subliners rode a heater into the CDL Major 4 Grand Finals, matching up with the ultra-consistent Atlanta FaZe. After taking map one handily with a score of 250-178, the Subliners would fall to FaZe in map two with an equally impressive 6-1 score.
Led by MVP front-runner Chris "Simp" Lehr, FaZe took a second consecutive map 3-1 on Highrise Control, putting the Major 2 Champs up 2-1 in the series. It was a back-and-forth series up to this point, but the Subliners flipped a switch in maps four, five, and six.
The submachine gun duo of KiSMET and HydrA willed their team to victory. New York dominated Rio Hardpoint and Search & Destroy Karachi, setting up a win-or-go-home situation for FaZe. Despite Atlanta's best efforts, the Subliners won a close Invasion Control, giving them the CDL Major 4 title.
