Modern Warfare 2 is the “biggest” CoD launch ever on PlayStation

Call of Duty remains atop the food chain regarding first-person shooters (FPS). Following the worldwide launch on October 28, the series' latest entry is already shattering records. Earlier today, the official PlayStation Twitter account announced Modern Warfare 2 enjoyed the biggest launch ever on the PlayStation Store. It's unclear what trajectory the game is on from an all-time standpoint, but this news is promising.

There have been many Call of Duty games over the last two decades – 19 to be precise – with a new one every year since 2006. As a result, the series has become a money-printing machine. Many players felt unsatisfied following Call of Duty: Vanguard, but developer Infinity Ward was up to the challenge of returning the series to top form.

The makers of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone have once again struck gold. While PlayStation did not release revenue figures, Modern Warfare 2 is the biggest launch title in the 20-year franchise. 

Interestingly enough, this accomplishment comes 16 days before the launch of Warzone 2.0 – a highly-anticipated follow-up to Call of Duty's successful Battle Royale title. Indeed, Modern Warfare 2 as a whole is on its way to becoming the highest-selling game in the game's history. 

According to VGChartz, the Call of Duty franchise has shipped more than 400 million units. The most successful title in history is Infinity Ward's Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (2019), with 30 million units sold. Furthermore, part of this title's success comes from the launch of Warzone; an aspect Modern Warfare 2 hopes to replicate on November 16.
