Reports are circulating that The Rock will play the lead role in a Call of Duty movie adaptation that’s currently in development.

Being a Call of Duty fan isn’t always sunshine and rainbows, but a glimmer of good news emerged today as Giant Freaking Robot reports that Dwayne Johnson will take the leading role in an upcoming Call of Duty movie.

The news comes after a Men’s Journal interview in which the actor who is also known for his wrestling persona The Rock said he was working on a movie based on a gaming franchise. In that interview, Johnson stated: “I can’t tell you which game in particular we’re doing, but there will be an announcement this year. We’re going to bring one of the biggest, most badass games to the screen—one that I’ve played for years.”

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson

This interview quote sent rumors swirling, with curious gamers suggesting everything from Mortal Kombat to Overwatch. But thanks to the report today, those rumors have been quashed. It’s now anticipated Dwayne Johnson will star in an upcoming Call of Duty.

The report is a boon for Call of Duty fans, who’ve not had much to celebrate recently. At the start of the year, the CDL seemed to be struggling, with LA Thieves owner Matthew “Nadeshot” Haag calling himself a fool for buying into it. TimTheTatman called Warzone’s Caldera map “Dead.”

But alongside the acquisition of Call of Duty publisher Activision by Microsoft earlier this year, there’s a lot of optimism in the franchise. Something like a big-budget blockbuster with a huge name behind it is the kind of spark that can revive a game. Especially with fans’ interest increasing split, with games like Apex Legends and PUBG as alternatives to much of what Call of Duty offers.

In the report, it’s said that Dwayne Johnson is still talking to studios. A solid story is probably a long way from being outlined. But those familiar with the franchise would most likely hope for something that uses material from the game. The cinematic appeal of the original Black Ops game, or Modern Warfare 2’s story, are hard to deny. It’s early days for the Call of Duty movie, but right now, hopes are high.
