This is currently the only esports category at the Sports Emmy Awards. But seeing a lot of top esports moments in the lineup — including VCT Champions and League of Legends Worlds — is definitely a step in the right direction. The show started including esports in 2019, nominating Rocket League, Apex Legends, Fortnite, and Fifa at that time — all losing to League of Legends.
This year is actually the second time that Call of Duty has been nominated. Last year, the 2020 Champs Finals match between Dallas Empire and Atlanta FaZe was nominated but League of Legends Worlds Finals won. In the past, Overwatch League was also nominated, but it hasn't been on the list since 2021.
The Sports Emmy Awards ceremony is taking place on May 22. It will feature 47 categories including the Esports Championship Coverage category. Check out all all the information here.
