X updates paid partnership rules

X recently updated its paid partnerships policy to prohibit promotions for gambling products and services. On the social media platform, paid partnerships refer to a third party providing compensation or incentives to a user to promote a product or service.

According to X, the policy applies when a brand gifts products, pays money, offers compensation, or provides commission through affiliate links or discount codes. The policy also applies when a user enters a commercial agreement such as serving as a brand ambassador.

The policy page then indicates that users must clearly label organic posts in paid partnerships with terms such as “ad” or “promoted content.” Users must follow all applicable laws and advertising regulations, including Federal Trade Commission (FTC) endorsement guidelines. The product, service, or call to action (CTA) should be clear without requiring additional clicks, too.

What are the prohibited industries?

Among the prohibited industries, X prohibits gambling products and services from paid partnership promotion. This includes including lotteries, social casinos, sports betting, plus other gambling-related content.

Other prohibited industries include alcohol, dating services, financial products, services, or opportunities, plus health and wellness supplements. The policy also prohibits pharmaceutical products, tobacco, and weapons-related services, and more.
