Frexs on SSG’s last dance: “We’re trying really hard, but deep down we all know if we kept playing together it probably wouldn’t work.”

Spacestation Gaming confirmed rumours on Feb. 2, that they will indeed be parting ways with their iconic Apex Legends roster after the ALGS Split 1 Playoffs concludes. SSG's Frexs, Xenial and Dropped joined the organisation back in March 2021, making them one of the most stable rosters in the entire Apex scene.

With the chapter soon to be closed, Esports.gg spoke to Joseph "Frexs" Sanchez about the trio's final stand.

Maly: It's your final outing under the SSG banner and you've made it to Winner's Bracket. Is this what you expected?

SSG.Frexs: "Honestly we've always been a really good team, but our vibes have been pretty wishy washy right now because, as you know, someone is leaving our team.

I had a feeling we would either do super poorly or just really good. The sad part is we're still such a good team even though we may not like each other, we still can show up on game day and play."

Maly: Almost 2 years together that's incredibly rare in Apex

SSG.Frexs: "Yeah, I've been to every LAN with these guys. We've shared all those experiences together. We've won and lost together. It's emotional. But it's still not over, we're still got winner's bracket and this tournament."

Maly: Do you still think it's the right time to go your separate ways? Even after performing here in London?

SSG.Frexs: "Yeah, I think so. We're trying really hard, but deep down we all know if we kept playing together it probably wouldn't work. I think what we decided as a group was the right decision."

Maly: So are you going to Sentinels?

SSG.Frexs: "I can say it's a maybe. I would say I'll probably make my decision after this LAN. Definitely not certain."

Maly: What has stood out to you about this event?

SSG.Frexs: "Probably just how much the meta has changed from the last season. Everybody's fighting, everybody's going crazy. We're just walking around and people are dying, we're like 'oh this is nice, we're just getting free points' (laughs)."

Maly: From a pro level what has changed specifically?

SSG.Frexs: "Seer and Horizon. Everybody is playing them and if you don't have them on your team then it's so hard to win a fight. They have so much fighting power and now everybody is fighting."

Maly: In this event you were contesting your POI with Vexed, how did that matchup go?

SSG.Frexs: "It went 1-1 and the third game they ran away from us."

Maly: How would you rate them as an opponent?

SSG.Frexs: "Well we're in winners and they're in losers." (smiles)

Maly: What was it like preparing for this event but scrimming without Dropped?

SSG.Frexs: "Scrims in general are very bad. We could literally play with anyone and do good. Scrims and on LAN are just so different. So much so that it doesn't even matter who we scrimmed with. Whenever you play scrims its just to practise team fighting, nothing else matters.

Then when you come to LAN suddenly everybody is trying so hard. There are some games where there are 20 teams alive in zone 3, other games it could be 12 teams. It depends what group you're in and how many edge teams are in it."

Maly: If you were in charge of competitive Apex Legends, what three things would you change?

SSG.Frexs: "First I would say better controller looting because it sucks on boxes. Second I would nerf Seer and Horizon. It feels like Seer's Q has like 18 different passives, it just shows so much. I feel it shouldn't stop heals or resses. Horizon on the other hand is just OP. Just take her out she's too good."

Maly: What about RE:45, is it broken?

SSG.Frexs: "Yes, if you're a controller player it is literally the best gun in the game."

Maly: If it's so broken why did you not include it in your top 3 changes (grin)

SSG.Frexs: "Because I'm a controller player. (laughs) It's so broken."

Maly: At this event a lot of praise has been given to the APAC region at this event but how do you rank the regions?

SSG.Frexs: "NA on top of course. We had 9 out of 10 teams make it to Winner's bracket. I feel NA has the brains and the mechanical skill that are insane. EMEA would have been way better this event if they had Aurora and Fire Beavers, because that's literally the two best teams. I don't really watch pay enough attention to the other regions to rank them."

Maly: Does that mean for this event you didn't look much into other region's teams?

SSG.Frexs: "The only thing we worry about when we come to LAN is where are we landing and who is around us. That's all we need to know. A lot of other teams do a lot more homework so they know where everyone is going. Me personally, I don't watch other people's VODs, I just focus on our own game plan."

Maly: What is about Apex that has kept you invested consistently over all this time?

SSG.Frexs: "I mean I'm competitive player and I get to fly around the world to compete. I love it. I'm also of the 'older' generation of players, I'm 28. The rest of the players are super young in comparison. I sometimes think 'damn I'm old but I'm still able to compete against these guys', and that I find super motivating."

Maly: Could you see yourself playing into your 30s?

SSG.Frexs: "If I'm still going, who knows. I'm a controller player so that takes like 10 years off your actual age. (laughs)"
