The much talked about Warlock Metamorphosis Rune for tanking in WoW Classic has been found. Here’s its location in the Season of Discovery.
The myth, the legend, the thing that brought all these new Warlock players to WoW Classic. Once thought a myth through this period of... uh, four days since Season of Discovery launched. We now know the location of the Warlock Metamorphosis Rune in WoW Classic. Cue the Solid Snake "Kept you waiting, huh?" references.
If you were one of the many, many.... many new Warlock players waiting to get your grubby mitts on the Metamorphosis rune in Season of Discovery then wait no more. Here's the deets.
EDITOR'S NOTE, 12/4/23 at 9:59 p.m.: Blizzard announced via Blue Post that they've removed raid requirement as part of the process for getting the rune. "It wasn’t our original intent for discoveries to take you into raid instances. Now, the enemies needed for completion of a prerequisite quest for a rune are both in the outdoor world and inside the raid." See below for the updated step.
How to get the Warlock Metamorphosis Rune in WoW Classic
Available to both factions and across all races, there's multiple avenues to getting the Warlock Metamorphosis Rune for tanking in WoW Classic. Here's the short version:
- Get the item Orb of Des from atop the Tower of Ilgalar in Redridge Mountains
- Loot the item Bough of Altek from atop the Tower of Althalaxx in Darkshore
- Complete the quest The Orb of Soran'ruk, found east of Camp Taurajo in The Barrens
- Coordinates for quest giver are at 49, 57
- The quest requires you get items from both Shadowfang Keep
and Blackfathom Deeps - NEW STEP: Players questing for “The Orb of Soran’ruk” will now find that The Twilight’s Hammer have invaded the shores of The Zoram Strand near Blackfathom Deeps.
- Completing that quest leads to The Conjuring, which sends you to Demon Fall Ridge in Ashenvale
- Go back to the altar that gave the quest, you'll then need to kill waves of demons with Drain Soul
- Defeating the final Infernal wave triggers the quest Mysterious Traveler
- Head back to that original location in The Barrens for your Metamorphosis Rune reward
Long-winded? Absolutely. However, the Warlock tanking rune is absolutely a class-changer. Equipping the Metamorphosis rune changes all of your core abilities, including Searing Pain, Shadow Bolt, Fear, and more.
And while it may feel like getting this rune only once you're max level feels like a waste, allow us to posit the following. First, remember that there are multiple phases to Season of Discovery coming. Secondly, isn't the thing that players complain about Retail WoW is that the quests are no longer complicated slogs that take hours of work and send you traipsing across the entire globe?
Well, congrats. You got your wish. Old World of Warcraft is so back, baby.
