Encrypted Vaults are one of the best ways to obtain the rarest items in The First Descendant, but only if you know how to find and open them.
Encrypted Vaults are boxes hidden away in The First Descendant, that you can find and open for some great rewards. You can discover many materials, equipment, and powerful weapons within an Encrypted Vault.
You can't just find one and unlock it, however. There are some steps to take and we'll walk you through them.
How to find an Encrypted Vault in The First Descendant
There are different types of Encrypted Vaults in The First Descendant. They're essentially mechanical-looking guared NPC that changes appearance based on rarity of the Vault. You'll notice the higher rarity, and harder to open vaults, have a more epic guard standing about.
To locate these vaults and the awesome guards that appear, follow these steps:
- Locate a small hologram in a green square as you travel throughout The First Descendant
- Press the button to scan (Tab on PC default settings)
- Continue looking in all directions from the hologram while scanning until you hear a pinging sound
- Begin to walk in the direction that the pinging sound originated from, continuing the scan
- The sound gets louder as you approach and you'll eventually locate one of the vault guards
It is important to check high and low for the Encrypted Vault in The First Descendant. The guard could be anywhere in that area, such as on a cliff, in a cavern, or just tucked into a corner lacking light that makes it hard to find them.

How to open Encrypted Vaults in The First Descendant
Once you finally come to the guard who gives up the Encrypted Vault's goods in The First Descendant, you have to open it. Interact with the guard to provide a Code Analyzer, which comes in rarities of Ultra Precision, Precision, and just the basic.
So, do the following to initiate a minigame to open the vault:
- Interact with the Encrypted Vault NPC to use a Code Analyzer
- Press the highlighted button when the needle enters the colored zone
- Repeat Step 2 until you open the vault and before the timer runs out
- The message that power has been restored appears and you receive your rewards
The higher the tier of the Encrypted Vault in The First Descendant, the faster the needle moves, the smaller the colored zone, and the more times you need to successfully complete it to win the minigame.
Where to get Code Analyzers
Again, there are three kinds of Code Analyzers. The base one, a Precision one, and an Ultra Precision one. It will tell you which one you need to open the Encrypted Vault when you approach it. If you do and notice you don't have one available, here's how you can obtain them:
- Do Extermination-style missions, as they only drop from enemies and not as mission rewards
- Farm the basic Code Analyzer from the Anticipate Ambush Point mission in the Sterile Lands region
- Precision and Ultra Code Analyzers have extremely low drop rates, so the only surefire way to obtain them is through higher level enemy fights with a bit of luck
If you do obtain one in-game, you can go to your Consumable section. Find it and open the Acquisition Info. This will tell you all of the missions where enemies may potentially drop that specific type of Code Analyzer.
