The entirety of Pokémon GO Fest Global follows a Sword and Shield type theme. There are daily spawns themed around this, and there are some other exciting things like cosmetics along these lines.
This is because this event is debuting Crowned Sword Zacian and Crowned Shield Zamazenta, from Pokémon Sword and Shield. Trainers will have to choose a path during Pokémon GO Fest Global's Special Research.
The path you choose determines certain rewards and bonuses across GO Fest Global so it is important to choose carefully.
The Special Research becomes avaliable at 10:00 a.m. local time on Saturday, June 28.

Do I pick the Sword or Shield path during Pokémon GO Fest Global?
Both the Sword and Shield path will give you some good bonuses and things to take advantage of. The major differences between them are around which of the two Crowned forms you want to focus on. This is a bit like the choice between Lunala and Solgaleo during last years Pokémon GO Fest.

What is the difference between the two paths?
The main difference between each Pokémon GO Fest path is as simple as it seems, Sword or Shield. Sword will lead to a Zacian encounter, Shield leads to Zamazenta. The Special Research will grant a guaranteed background and also the 1000 Crowned Sword or Crowned Shield energy you need.
Along the way there will be some different encounters but these aren't really a big deal. To decide, there is only two things to consider.
- Can you do Raids on both event days?
- Do you have a favourite between the Zacian or Zamazenta?
That is because only one of the two Pokémon is in Raids each day. So, if you cannot play on Sunday when Zacian spawns, pick the Sword Path or vice versa. That means you will get energy for both Crowned Forms.
Otherwise, just pick your favourite and personal preference. Both are immensely powerful and useful Pokémon that will serve you very well in the game. Neither Pokémon GO Fest path is "better" than the other so the decision is quite simple.
