If you want to take two pistols into MW2 like a true gunslinger, you’ll need to unlock Akimbo by leveling up each handgun.

The Akimbo attachment in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is a fan-favorite. And for good reason. It is in the rear grip category and offers a second weapon in your other hand. There are some tradeoffs you'll make with Akimbo, but you can never go wrong with double the firepower in MW2.

Every handgun in the game has this attachment as an option. For the majority of them, you'll need unlock Akimbo separately. This requires obtaining the gun and leveling it up according to its own requirements for the Akimbo attachment.

How to unlock Akimbo for each available weapon in MW2

As you unlock the different handguns in MW2, you can view their Weapon Platforms. This shows you a progression tree where leveling up one gun may unlock another. Dig a bit deeper and you can see specific attachments for each gun on any given Weapon Platform.

Look at the track and navigate through the levels until you see the Akimbo icon, which is two pistols side by side of different shades. That will tell you at what level you'll unlock the Akimbo attachment for that weapon in MW2. Here are all of them:

  • P890: Reach weapon level 26
  • .50 GS: Reach weapon level 17
  • X12: Reach weapon level 19
  • Basilisk: Reach weapon level 28
  • X13 Auto: Reach weapon level 19 with the X12

Each gun requires you to get pretty far on its track before Akimbo becomes available. You'll also notice that the X13 Auto is the only weapon that receives Akimbo because of another weapon. It and the X12 are on the same Weapon Platform, thus making the X12 the way to get Akimbo for both in MW2.

When you finally have this rear grip attachment available, you can create some insanely powerful handgun loadouts. Just know that Akimbo removes the ability to ADS and you have to fire each weapon on its own. Get used to that and you'll be unstoppable.
