The former head coach of Team Liquid VALORANT, Connor “Sliggy” Blomfield, is signing back on with the organization as a content creator.
The former head coach of Team Liquid VALORANT, Connor “Sliggy” Blomfield, signed back onto the European-based organization. However, Sliggy won’t reprise his role as head coach. Instead, he will step into a role as a content creator.
Team Liquid Signs Sliggy as content creator
The move arrived nine months after stepping down as the coach of Team Liquid. During that time, Sliggy worked as an independent analyst on his Twitch channel and got hired by Riot to work as on-air desk talent.
Operations in the Team Liquid organization will continue as planned with Emil “eMIL” Sandgren keeping his coaching position alongside newly-signed talent such as former Masters champions Ayaz “nAts” Akhmetshin and Igor “Redgar” Vlasov.
The re-signing announcement from Team Liquid VALORANT’s Twitter showed Sliggy haunting his former teammates.
Few coaches in VALORANT garner as much respect and adoration as Sliggy. For the more analytically-minded crowd, Sliggy’s co-streams were a phenomenal alternative to get an in-depth perspective from a coach on games. He gathered a significant following, which was enough to warrant a partnership with his former organization as a streamer.
Legacy as head coach
As for Sliggy’s accomplishment as head coach, Team Liquid achieved their highest placings and form under his leadership. A top-four finish at VALORANT Champions 2021 was the high water mark, and the team managed a oddly-structured roster for a second top-four finish at VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) 2021: Stage 2 Masters in Reykjavík.
Unfortunately, the roster issues eventually crept up on him. After falling to ZETA Division during the VCT 2022: Stage 1 Masters in Reykjavík, the team needed a new direction. The lack of in-game leadership and a unbalanced set of players made Sliggy an easy scapegoat for the larger, structural issues.
After an up-and-down 2022 campaign, Sliggy tweeted that he was stepping down from the team. He cited “difference in vision and direction within the team.” The split was mutual, and he pivoted away from coaching to focus on content.
It’s unknown if Sliggy will have any role in the analytical department for this new Team Liquid roster. Regardless, we’ll get plenty of more Sliggy content in 2023 back under the Team Liquid banner.
