The extremely competitive Group B will see EG and FUT clash in the inaugural match at Tokyo Masters

The VCT Masters Tokyo kicks off with FUT taking on Evil Geniuses in the inaugural match. Group B includes DRX and Attacking Soul esports, so the first match - FUT vs EG - of the tournament is also a very important one for the two teams.

With DRX expected to top this group, the second spot fight will be between FUT and Evil Geniuses. As such, the team that wins the opening match has a higher chance of qualifying for the playoffs.

Map 1: Split

Evil Geniuses won the pistol round and carried forward the momentum with three more round wins. A 4-0 start as already s very strong one, but their momentum was broken when FUT scored their first round win.

FUT managed to string together quite a few rounds to end the half with a very respectable 5-7. However, their attack was non-existent as they were unable to put together a single round win.

With a 1.49 rating and 244 ACS, Com was the best player on Evil Geniuses. But it was a very even showing throughout the team and they relied more on their communication and playing together to secure their advantage. FUT esports had some standout moments, but they seemed to falter when it came to a broader strategical overview against Evil Geniuses.

Map 2: Lotus

Evil Geniuses had won both pistols on Split. So when they won the Pistol again on Lotus, it was not very surprising. However, comiong into the second map as the underdogs, FUT needed to win crucial pistol rounds to gain an advantage..

When FUT were pushing A, it became nearly impossible for them to go past Boostio who was holding the connector from A to B. He got four kills from the connector before securing his Ace later on the B bombsite.

The two teams kept exchanging rounds before settling on a 6-6 score. But FUT's defense was pretty strong, as we all saw on Bind. After a very comfortable 6 rounds on the attackign side, FUT were back on their more comfortable side. They strung quite a few rounds together to take the score to 12-9, only one round away from victory.

Boostio's heroic and extremely aggressive performance on the 22nd round ensured Evil Geniuses secured one more round. They survived enough and took out enough time for EG to get into double digits.

That single performance allowed EG to win the next round as well with superior weapons, taking the map to 11-12. A round win for EG would mean overtime, while FUT needed one round to tie the series.

In the end, Evil Geniuses seemed to have all the momentum to close out the map 14-12. It was a close fight by FUT and definitely one where they could've taken the series to Map 3, but today was simply not their day. With a 271 ECS, Ethan was the highlight of the EG performaec

FUT esports Roster:

FUT comes into this tournament as one of the underdogs. The team finished 3rd in the EMEA League behind Team Liquid and Fnatic. While the world’s best teams are competing for the win at Masters Tokyo, there is also another ongoing race. The teams are also competing for a chance to qualify for VCT Champs 2023 later in the season. With a different format that might see some of the more successful teams unable to make it to Champs, the four EMEA teams are in tough competition at this tournament.
