Before Discord, TeamSpeak ruled the waves of chatter between players of games. Now, it makes its triumphant return.
Discord may be the voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP) program everyone has come to know and love. But before the days of spamming gifs and annoying your friends with the soundboard, many other programs existed. Mumble, Ventrilo, TeamSpeak, and even Skype were just a few of the go-to VoIP programs. This was a simpler time when microphones crackled and nobody cared about customized profile pictures.
Everything was peaceful until Discord attacked and took over the VoIP world. When the world needed them most, TeamSpeak vanished – until now.

TeamSpeak comes out swinging
On Jan. 16, TeamSpeak’s X account was set abuzz. They posted a cryptic Tweet with the words, “It’s time.” Over the following days, the account continued to tease with images, leading up to a post on Jan. 18 letting the public know it was time for a revival. According to their posts, TeamSpeak’s new iteration will include the following:
- Screen sharing
- Camera sharing
- 1440p/source streaming
- Multi-streaming
- Community servers
With a complete overhaul of its design, TeamSpeak seems to be completely refreshed and ready to take on the juggernaut that is Discord. While knowing their biggest competition, the account continued to inform everyone in their posts exactly how to delete Discord accounts and unsubscribe to Nitro – Discord’s premium service.
However, one of the major issues which were encountered previously with TeamSpeak was the lack of server capacity. Groups of larger than eight would be required to purchase or rent a server. While this was changed to 32 on the free license, it does not bode well when Discord can house thousands in one space without payment.
All that said, TeamSpeak’s marketing for their return is sublime, and many are tired of the countless pointless new features that Discord adds constantly. TeamSpeak’s latest iteration is set to release on Jan. 22, so we will soon see if they can overthrow their new master.
