Emiru’s assault proves that streamers aren’t safe at TwitchCon 2025

Her private security saved the day. But the event’s security shined for their absence.

The online community and streamers alike are furious about an incident involving Emily Beth "Emiru" Schunk at TwitchCon 2025, where an unknown man assaulted her in front of the event's security and the fans that were waiting in line to meet her.

The event happened during a Meet & Greet session organized by Twitch. The streamer was about to take a picture with one fan when suddenly a man interrupted the scene. He allegedly tried to kiss her while she was in shock. Fortunately, her private security guard managed to push the man and protect her. However, the event's security did not intervene, which made the situation more unsettling.

This terrifying event was captured by another content creator who was waiting to meet Emiru at TwitchCon 2025. Thanks to this footage, we can see exactly how the situation developed.

Amazon's streaming platform released a public statement, stating that they responded quickly to the situation. However, this was later denied by Emiru herself when she shared her side of the story. For the community, Twitch's actions were insufficient. Allegedly, they only apprehended the offender after hours had passed. He also received a permanent ban from Twitch’s events.

Emiru's statement after the assault at TwitchCon 2025

The popular streamer took to X and shared her take on this situation.

In her own words, "none of the TwitchCon staff came to ask what happened or if I was okay." For Emiru, there's no excuse or explanation for how this person managed to get to her in the first place.

But TwitchCon 2025 is not the first Twitch event where Emiru was put in danger. It's also publicly known that the streaming platform banned another member of her security guard team. The reason was that he grabbed another man trying to assault her by the arm to bring him to the authorities.

After her post, Emiru turned on her stream to share more information and describe the event. She voiced her concerns about how insecure it is for female streamers to do Meet & Greets at Twitch events. Additionally, the streamer explains how dangerous this is for smaller creators, considering this has happened to her, one of the platform's biggest stars.

I was just taking a picture with someone else, and I see a guy walking around the side of the Meet & Greet. [...] He crosses in front of another streamer's Meet & Greet and walks to me. He grabs me and leans like he's gonna tell something to me. In my head I thought maybe he was some TwitchCon staff [...] but I'm still freaked out 'cause he grabbed me and that's not normal. Then, he grabs my face, he leans in, and tries to kiss me. And I start screaming. Twitch's security is nowhere to be found. I can see them, but they don't do anything. My security jumps up and throws the guy away from me, [...] and he's allowed to... walk away and leave?

Emiru's description of the event on her Oct. 18, 2025 live stream

Twitch CEO's tone-deaf response: "Even if you do a lot in terms of security, there are challenges that can present themselves, especially when someone is putting themselves out there."

Moments after Emiru's statement on the assault she experienced at TwitchCon 2025, Dan Clancy, Twitch's CEO, answered questions about the situation. Unfortunately, his words weren't what the community expected.

Instead of taking responsibility, he excused the event's poor security protocols by blaming the community. This was a great opportunity to apologize and explain how they will improve during the rest of the event. However, he decided to say that this issue is more of the society than the event.

"The challenge we face is a challenge of today's society. It's not limited to Twitch. I do think that when you're live-streaming, in many ways, you can control your community. You can ban people. You can make it so that those people who you don't want are not there," he said in an interview.

What's even more unsettling is how Twitch's CEO statement about the assault that Emiru suffered at TwitchCon 2025 offers no solutions to the situation. Here's a list of the things he could have done immediately after the incident:

  • Apologize to Emiru for the poor management of the situation and the proven lack of security for the creators at the event.
  • Share a plan of action with reinforced security for the creator at the venue.
  • Avoid participating in dynamics at the event that show how disconnected he is from the issue.
  • Take the offender to the corresponding authorities instead of giving him such a small punishment as a "ban" from the event.

Streamers reacted to Emiru's incident at TwitchCon 2025

While Twitch's response was out of touch, the biggest names in the industry immediately acknowledged the issue and stood by Emiru's side.

Ludwig "Ludwig" Ahgren reminded that this issue is not new, and reinforced how creators previously asked for better security at TwitchCon events. He also applauded Emiru's decision to come back and finish her Meet & Greet session despite the unfortunate events.

Charles Christopher "MoistCr1TiKaL" White Jr. was out of words about how weak Twitch's reaction was. He wasn't pleased about how Emiru's manager had to take action for the platform to follow up on the situation.

Sakura Shymko and Nina Lin were immediately scared for Emiru's safety when they saw the clip. "That's why I don't wanna do Meet & Greets. How is that security? That's so disrespectful," they said while live-reacting to the video of the assault.

Zack "Asmongold" Hoyt also took part in the conversation. The now-Kick streamer blamed the platform for lying to the community, and labeled Twitch's actions on Emiru's situation as "actively trying to cover up sexual assault."

At esports.gg, we hope that Emiru stays safe and is allowed to enjoy the warmth of her community's support without the fear of being assaulted again.
