Roblox is taking another step to address issues that could lead to future safety concerns on the platform.

Roblox CEO David Baszucki announced that in June, accounts on the popular gaming platform will be segregated based on age groups: Roblox Kids, Select, and Standard.

After facing safety concerns and bans in multiple countries, Roblox introduced age-based accounts to strengthen its platform safeguards. Each account type comes with preset configurations for communication settings, content access, and parental controls.

This change will start rolling out in early June, and those who already own a Roblox account will be required to undergo an age-check process if they haven’t done so already.

How do the new age-based accounts in Roblox work?

Users aged 5 to 8 are categorized as Roblox Kids. Those between 9 and 15 fall under Roblox Select, while users aged 16 and above are assigned to Standard Roblox accounts.

The platform’s game catalog is filtered based on a user’s account type. Roblox Kids accounts, in particular, can only access experiences approved for their age group. Roblox Select accounts have fewer restrictions, while Standard accounts can browse the full catalog, similar to how it was before the update.

Along with the availability of games, these age-based accounts are also tailored to limit access to communication for the younger users. This will ultimately allow Roblox Kids account users to only interact with other players within their age group.

More robust parental control and game publishing standards

In addition to the newly set accounts, Roblox releases a couple more protective measures to reinforce its new policies. One of these is the new parental control feature, where parents can now block and approve specific games, as well as manage their child’s direct chat settings through age 15.

Another layer of protection comes from Roblox’s updated game publishing standards, which require creators of experiences rated under 16 to undergo a review process. This includes ID verification, two-step authentication, and a Roblox Plus subscription to be released on April 30.
