Pokémon Champions finally unveiled most of its core gameplay mechanics, including the exact date of its release.

According to a trailer posted on Nintendo of America’s YouTube channel, Pokémon Champions will release globally on April 8, 2026 and be immediately become compatible with Pokémon HOME.

Pokémon Champions appears exactly what fans expect it to be. Unlike the mainline titles, which focus on exploration and interactions with characters and various Pokémon species, this game is built around a single purpose: battling.

While the overall battle mechanics are based on the typical turn-based formula of the Pokémon games, players still need to get used to a couple of new details introduced in Pokémon Champions.

This article gives you a complete summary of the trailer, including how the game can be played on Switch devices this April.

“This game is all about battles”

Based on the trailer, Pokémon Champions solely revolves around online Pokémon battles, where you can fully customize your team’s roster, their abilities, nature, and even stat points.

Since the Pokémon Champions game doesn’t have any exploration features, you can only acquire Pokémon that you can use in battles by transferring the ones you have in Pokémon HOME or using the game’s Recruit option.

The Recruit option works like a free gacha system where you can randomly choose a Pokémon that you can play for a limited amount of time. Since the recruited Pokémon only joins your team temporarily, the more reliable option would be to make good use of the Pokémon you have in Pokémon GO and transfer them to Pokémon Champions via Pokémon HOME.

As of writing, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is not yet compatible with Pokémon HOME. While there isn’t an official confirmation yet, fans can hope for a potential update sometime this year. For now, any possibility of connectivity, including a surprise announcement from The Pokémon Company, remains purely speculative.

Other key highlights from the Pokémon Champions trailer

Apart from that, here are the most interesting things that players should look forward to when playing Pokémon Champions next month:

  • Three online battle modes: Ranked, Casual, and Private Battles.
  • Before an online battle begins, you can view your opponent’s team and choose which Pokémon to send out first. The same feature applies to your opponent.
  • Some Pokémon can mega evolve, and their mega evolved forms may have abilities that are entirely new to the franchise.
  • The battle rules are largely the same as in the mainline titles: players take turns attacking, and the first to knock out all of their opponent’s Pokémon wins the match.
  • Players can join online competitions with pre-set rules that change every season.
  • The game’s main currency is called Victory Points (VPs). You can collect VPs by joining battles, and you can spend them to train your Pokémon by adjusting their moves, stats, abilities, and nature.
  • You can also spend your VPs to claim recruited Pokémon permanently or access the in-game shop to buy mega stones and held items, as well as clothing and hairstyles for your avatar.

Is Pokémon Champions free to play on its release date?

Pokémon Champions will become a free-to-start downloadable game in the Nintendo eShop starting April 8. This means you will be able to play Pokémon Champions for free, albeit with limited features.

You will be able to purchase the Pokémon Champions + Starter Pack for additional perks such as increased Pokémon storage and tickets as well.
