Take on Mega Gyarados with our updated raid guide.

Mega Gyarados is back in Pokémon GO Mega Raids until May 25. This powerful Water and Dark-type Pokémon is one of the best attackers in both categories and is a good Mega Pokémon to have in your team.

Additionally, unlike a lot of other strong Water or Dark-type Pokémon in Pokémon GO, Mega Gyarados does not need an Elite TM to access its strongest moveset. That makes it a much more accessible option to use.

So, here is everything you need to know to take on Mega Gyarados in Pokémon GO.

Best Mega Gyarados counters in Pokémon GO:

Mega Gyarados has a weakness to Bug, Electric, Fairy, Fighting and Grass-type moves in Pokémon GO. Additionally, it has a double resistance to Psychic-type moves as well as single resistance to Dark, Fire, Ghost, Ice, Steel and Water-types.

With Mega Gyarados having five weaknesses in total, there are plenty of Pokémon to choose from when taking on this raid.

Here are the best Mega Gyarados counters in Pokémon GO:

Mega LucarioForce Palm & Aura Sphere
Mega SceptileFury Cutter & Frenzy Plant
Mega GardevoirCharm & Dazzling Gleam
Mega HeracrossCounter & Megahorn
KartanaRazor Leaf & Leaf Blade
Mega VenusaurVine Whip & Frenzy Plant

KeldeoLow Kick & Sacred Sword
TerrakionDouble Kick & Sacred Sword
Tapu KokoVolt Switch & Nature’s Madness
XurkitreeThunder Shock & Discharge
Mega ManectricThunder Fang & Wild Charge
Hisuian DecidueyeMagical Leaf & Aura Sphere

Thankfully, lots of these strong Mega Gyarados counters have been in Pokémon GO recently. Tapu Koko was in Raids not that long ago, as was Mega Heracross, Mega Lucario and Terrakion. Keldeo is a lot harder to get, but an effective choice if you have it in your collection.

In addition, standard Lucario is also a great option for this Raid. Seen as you are limited to one Mega Evolution at once, following up with standard Lucarios is a great way to flesh out your team of six.

Can Gyarados be shiny in Pokémon GO?

Yes, the Gyarados you encounter after the Raid can be shiny. Look out for that iconic red color!

Mega Evolutions can help you get more candy and XL candy with every catch. Having a mega level 3 active that boosts candy for Water and Flying-types will give you an extra 2 candy per catch, as well as a 25% bonus to your XL candy chance.

Here are the Pokémon you can Mega Evolve to get more Gyarados candy:

  • Blastoise
  • Rayquaza
  • Pidgeot
  • Slowbro
  • Pinsir
  • Gyarados
  • Aerodactyl
  • Swampert
  • Salamence
  • Kyogre

How many trainers do I need to beat Mega Gyarados in Pokémon GO?

Trainers should aim for a group of three, ideally with Party Play, when they take on a Mega Gyarados raid. For lower level trainers who don’t have optimum counters, a group of about six is a safe bet.

Don’t forget that for Mega Raids, the faster you beat them, the more Mega Energy you get at the end.

What is the Gyarados Pokémon GO 100% IV hundo CP?

When you beat a Mega Raid, you encounter the standard Pokémon not the Mega version. That means that the following Gyarados CP values will mean a 100% IV hundo Pokémon:

  • 1937 CP
  • 2422 CP (weather boosted)

Weather Effects:

Weather boost can help you save candy, get better IVs and benefit from power boosts on your team. Here are the weather effects to keep an eye on when taking on these Mega Gyarados raids.
