Overwatch Anran face update

On April 6, Overwatch game director Aaron Keller gave players an update about Anran’s in-game appearance. He said the team felt her original design did not fully match her intended personality. Therefore, they adjusted her face and posture to give her a more confident and mature look. He added that even small changes like posture help her feel more like herself, and that the update also brings her closer in appearance to her brother Wuyang.

“We think she could come across older, and that her original version was too innocent and playful,” Keller said. “Anran is confident, determined, fierce, and a natural-born leader, and we want her visuals in-game to convey that personality. So we made some adjustments to her face. We focused on her eyes, eyebrows, and mouth, and we moved away from that baby face look and expression to something more sincere and more mature.”

Overwatch Anran face change explained

Earlier this year, Overwatch players criticized Anran’s in-game appearance for not matching her earlier teasers in videos and comics. Many players noted that her face looked too similar to other heroes and lacked a distinct identity. As a response, Keller posted a video that acknowledged the feedback and promised a face update.

“The team is currently discussing what it would take to make Anran look and feel more like the fierce, older sister that we all envision her to be,” Keller said back in February. “We’re so proud of the work that our team has put into Anran and the rest of the five heroes launching in Season 1, and we agree that she can be even better if we get this aspect of her right in-game.”
