Who is Kuroura in the Overwatch universe? Is the game getting another Japanese hero? Here is what's known so far plus some theories.

Overwatch’s latest short story featuring Mizuki may be hinting at a new hero. Is a Hashimoto character joining the Overwatch roster? Is it Kuroura? Here’s what we know so far.

Overwatch teases possible Hashimoto hero

On March 3, Overwatch released a new short story titled “Cursebreaker.” The story featured Mizuki having a conversation with Toshiro Yamagami. Mizuki mentioned the name “Kuroura” in it as well. He said that the Yōkai were disrupting the Hashimoto’s operations. Therefore, he had to infiltrate the group to gather information. Mizuki then mentioned that even someone named Kuroura did not know about his mission to Kanezaka.

“Some punks are interfering with our operations out there. They want me to infiltrate, do some recon. Even Kuroura doesn’t know I’m coming — the elders don’t trust the Kanezaka branch not to blow my cover,” Mizuki said.

These sentences could be suggesting that Kuroura has a position within the Kanezaka branch and has some authority or involvement in the Hashimoto Clan’s operations. The part about the elders may also imply that the Hashimoto Clan doesn’t fully trust the Kanezaka branch and Kuroura.

Overwatch’s “Cursebreaker” short story also featured another interesting line. In it, Mizuki mentioned the elders, a woman, and a curse. The short story put the word “she” in italics for emphasis.

“It’s not like I asked to walk the gokudō path. This was my fate. And you’re telling me I should just leave? Fight against the inevitable the way dad did? I can’t. If the elders don’t get me — if she doesn’t get me — the curse will,” Mizuki said.

Interestingly, “Keigo Kuroura” was a character in the “Guardian of Kanezaka” manga as well.

Kuroura in Overwatch

Many players on X and Reddit noticed the possible teaser in Mizuki’s short story. “The Season 3 hero, likely tied to the Hashimoto clan, may have been teased in the latest short story,” OWCavalry theorized on X. OWCavalry added that this character’s last name could be Kuroura.

The image that OWCavalry used for the post came from the Spotlight event and Overwatch’s 2026 roadmap. On Feb. 4, Overwatch revealed this roadmap and teased its Season 3 hero with a silhouette that had horns.

These horns could reference a Hannya or Oni mask. In Japanese culture, Hannya masks represent jealous female demons while Oni masks ward off malevolent demons or spirits. Overwatch already has references to these via the Onryō Hanzo mythic skin and Oni Genji skin. Mizuki voice lines also mention his aforementioned curse and good luck charms.

The Hashimoto Kiriko and Hashimoto Hanzo skins feature masks as well, which appears to be a Hashimoto signature. Interestingly, Japan Night is Overwatch Season 3’s new map, too. Thus, there’s a possibility that the new Overwatch hero is Japanese.

Again, these are only theories about the potential Hashimoto hero in Overwatch. At the time of publishing this article, Blizzard Entertainment has not revealed further details about the Season 3 hero or Kuroura.
