Overwatch 2 Genesis Part 3: Rebirth recap
The final part of the mini-series began with a summary of why the United Nations created Overwatch. The team achieved some victories in hopes of turning the tide against the omnics, but it wasn't enough. Anubis, the God program controlling the warbots, learned from defeats very quickly.
Enter Aurora. Created by Dr. Mina Liao, she was the first sentient omnic. This meant she wasn't affected by Anubis' call. Since the AI interfaced with warbots, it was possible for Aurora to do that as well, according to robotics engineer Mathias Verne.
"She was one of a kind, but we found a way to replicate her. To transmit her. The cost would be so incredibly high," Camara Verne, another robotics engineer, said.
Aurora and Liao were seen in a lab before the former's faceplate got removed. This resulted in an explosive signal sent out to every omnic in the world. Their lights changed from the color red to blue. That moment became known as the "Awakening."
"For the first time in our existence, we were suddenly given a choice," Grant, an author, recalled. "Some chose to lay down their weapons. Some continued to fight the humans. But some of us chose to turn against the AI that had held us captive. We had a choice."
Overwatch, the Awakening, and the Omnic Crisis explained
Team Overwatch took advantage of the Awakening. This led up to winning the war and quarantining Anubis in Cairo. Near the end of the Overwatch 2 Genesis Part 3: Rebirth, Grant recalled Aurora's message during the Awakening as well.
Aurora talked about becoming overwhelmed with the rush of emotions, senses, and choices when she became sentient. She also talked about how freedom meant finding one's own path.
"I wish I could stay," Aurora said before ending the Overwatch 2 Genesis series with a hopeful message. "You have this one life. Choose well."
