Here’s the latest round of characters confirmed for MK1 at Gamescom 2023!
Mortal Kombat 1 and NetherRealm Studios' creative director Ed Boon made a highly-anticipated appearance at this year's Gamescom 2023 event. With only a few Mortal Kombat 1 roster spots remaining, the latest trailer added General Shao and Sindel to the primary roster. Additionally, the centaur warrior Motaro and 3D-era character Shujinko made Kameo appearances.
The "Official Rulers of Outworld" trailer also gave fans a glimpse into Raiden's gameplay ahead of Mortal Kombat 1's September launch. As the release date rapidly approaches, let's look at the newest announced characters.
A closer look at General Shao and Sindel in Mortal Kombat 1
The rumors are true–Mortal Kombat 1 will be the first game to showcase Shao Kahn before earning the Kahn title. He is a General in this game, meaning he has yet to become the ruler of Outworld.
Sindel is the Empress of Edenia following the death of her late husband Jerrod. General Shao serves the Empress, and brings much of what you would expect from the character. He is a proponent of war and violence, wielding an axe and utilizing brute force to damage his opponents.
On the other side, Sindel brings her usual bag of hair and scream tricks to the table. She is an agile character who can spend time in the air and possesses various projectile attacks.

Motaro returns to MK1 alongside Shujinko as Kameo characters
Fans have called for it for some time, and it's finally happening. Motaro is back in Mortal Kombat as a Kameo character in his proper centaur form. While he can be briefly seen in Mortal Kombat 11 and Mortal Kombat 9, he was not playable.
Given the new Kameo system, Mortal Kombat 1 created the perfect opportunity for Motaro to return. In the trailer, he fights alongside Sindel, using projectiles and his horns during the Fatal Blow attack.
Also, returning to the series for the first time since Mortal Kombat: Armageddon is Shujinko. Those who played Mortal Kombat: Deception may remember Shujinko as the main character.
Shujinko played the Kameo role behind Raiden in the trailer, using an axe, rapid punches, and even a throat crush.
With four more characters confirmed, only a few roster spots remain. You can refer to this article for a complete list of Mortal Kombat 1 characters and this article for all character bios.
