MAD Lions KOI will rebrand as KOI for the next League of Legends EMEA Championship in 2025. Fans even made part of the creative process.
The Spanish team MAD Lions KOI will rebrand (again). The team will be called only KOI in the League of Legends EMEA Championship (LEC) as Iban Llanos announced on his Twitch stream. You'll have to wait until 2025 to see the new rebrand in League of Legends.
KOI organization journey
In 2021, one of the biggest Spanish streamers and LoL casters Iban LLanos, alongside the FC Barcelona ex-player, Gerard Piqué, brought MAD Lions to the KOI organization and renamed the team MAD Lions KOI, as we know them today.
In 2022, after winning LEC, Rogue announced a merger with the KOI. The organization became responsible for two teams in the European League of Legends championship. All Rogue teams rebranded as KOI but their partnership didn't go well and the team was reestablished one year later.
At the beginning of 2024, OverActive Media executed a letter of intent to acquire Spanish esports organizations Movistar Riders and KOI. This included all KOI esports assets and brands, including social media and intellectual property.

MAD Lions KOI is a name with a very significant meaning for Spanish fans: MAD came from Madrid, the city where the team was born. The lion, the gold main symbol we always see, represents the lions from the Cibeles Fountain, a very important monument in the city. KOI is the name of the organization. Besides the lion, they also represented Madrid with the seven stars coming from the capital's flag.
On his livestream, Ibai was letting his community be part of the MAD Lions KOI rebrand by choosing what colors they wanted to see. This is very uncommon since it's not every day we see an organization owner let the fans be part of the creative process.
MAD Lions KOI year
MAD Lions KOI had a very good year in League of Legends by ending the European league in the third spot, right after FNATIC and G2 Esports.
They qualified for the LoL Worlds 2024 Play-Ins, making great performances and proving their value. Later in the competition, into the Swiss Stage, they were eliminated by GAM Esports. Let's see how they'll play in the next LoL Split.
