Match recap: HLE vs FLY
One thing was pretty notable about the plan of FlyQuest in this game — they picked quite a few rather unusual champions to confuse HLE. As a result, they managed to be pretty good at team fights and even win one game.
Hanwha Life Esports started the match somewhat relaxed, probably with the hope of outclassing their opponents. They led to bitter mistakes from them and disappointing moments. HLE still got themselves together in Game 3. They adapted well to the strengths of their opponents, won this match, and qualified for the Knockout stage.
Hanwha Life Esports advanced to the quarter-final of LoL Worlds 2024. FlyQuest have a decider match on Oct. 13. For both teams, the matchups will be determined a bit later, in draw ceremonies.

Game 1
FlyQuest picked pretty unusual LoL Champions (as for Worlds 2024): Urgot for the top lane and Amumu as a Jungler. Maybe because of this or maybe due to the carefree approach from HLE, the American team… did not get destroyed too soon.
The power of FLY in this game was in their team fights. They could find good angles to attack and kill opponents quickly. At some moments, HLE did not expect Urgot to be so tanky — Bwipo survived the initial attacks to wait for teammates and hit back.
The hope was real for FlyQuest! It was destroyed with one good kill from HLE. After that, they did not even need Baron. All FLY champions were dead, and Hanwha Life Esports won game 1.

This time, HLE decided to ban some of those unusual picks: Amumu and Cassiopeia. But FLY had Nunu & Willump in their pocket! The NA team banned one of the most effective mid-lane champions at LoL Worlds 2024: Yone.
After a pretty good laning stage, Hanwha Life Esports started repeating the mistakes of Game 1. They chose poor positioning, which helped FLY win crucial team fights — like a Baron steal. After a couple of such situations, FlyQuest were ahead in terms of gold and kills. They got the Baron buff, Cloud Soul, Elder Dragon, and the bot Inhibitor of HLE.
The Korean players could do nothing against this power. After a couple of pretty cautious siege attempts, FlyQuest destroyed the Nexus and took the LoL Worlds 2024 Swiss qualification match to the decisive game.
Game 2
Again, Hanwha Life Esports banned some of the previously good picks of their opponents: Olaf, Kalista, and Leona. Surprises from FlyQuest did not end there, as they picked Sion for the top lane. Also, FLY secured the bot champion of HLE from Games 1: Kai'Sa.
The laning stage was strongly in favor of Hanwha Life Esports. They delivered some kills, earned gold, and secured six Voidgrubs. To seal this advantage, HLE won a fight around the first Baron and got this buff for themselves.
When HLE went for the base, FLY had a good chance to win that fight and eliminate their opponents. But a great play from Peanut saved them from disaster. The base of FlyQuest was in ruins. Hanwha Life Esports retreated for the Soul and another Baron buff — to return pretty soon and destroy the Nexus.
Break the limits! Prove the power!
This League of Legends match was certainly important for both teams. And it’s pretty unclear which players had more pressure: Hanwha Life Esports or FlyQuest.
On the one hand, teams from the LoL Champions Korea are the favorites in a matchup against teams from the LoL Championship Series (North America). Winning here could be a great step for FlyQuest! This could break the limits for the team and the entire region.
On the other hand, Hanwha Life Esports certainly didn’t want to be that Korean team who lost to an NA one and missed the Knockout stage qualification. Underestimating opponents is never a good idea in top-level LoL esports. HLE had to prove their power. That victory over T1 in the regional split needed another layer of verification.
HLE and FLY at LoL Worlds 2024
During the three starting rounds of the LoL Worlds 2024 Swiss stage, Hanwha Life Esports got two victories. On Day 1, they defeated PSG Talon. On Day 2, they celebrated a win over G2 Esports. Still, HLE couldn’t repeat their success in the LCK Summer 2024 grand final. Gen.G Esports defeated Hanwha Life Esports in the previous qualification match.
The winners of the LCS Summer split 2024 had victories against two teams from the minor regions: GAM Esports on Day 1 and PSG Talon in the Round 3 Bo1 match. Facing a Korean team wasn’t as successful for them. Dplus KIA defeated FLY on Day 2 of the LoL Worlds 2024 Swiss stage (and DK players openly celebrated getting these opponents in the draw).
