Match recap
It is possible to describe the series as back-and-forth, even if the final score doesn’t reflect that. The match between Fnatic and G2 Esports brought us the longest game in this series and some of the best moments in competitive League of Legends.
Fnatic looked stronger in the starting game periods, but they couldn’t keep this momentum until the end. G2 had bad moments now and then, and they made some mistakes. Still, G2 Esports worked like a well-oiled machine, developing their advantage and then striking with the full power.
G2 Esports are the champions of all three splits and the seasonal Finals in LEC. They won the EU Grand Slam and the domestic golden road.
“Winning today… a lot of comebacks, a lot of cheers from the crowd — thank you very much for the support.
I think we did a wrong meta read in the first series [of the LEC Season Finals]. And we were not really there on that day performing. Definitely having a lot of Bo5 helped us find our place in the meta.”
“I feel very happy to win this trophy. It was a long road through the losers brackets, and we had sweat in a lot of Bo5. I’m really proud of my team. Everyone put in so much effort.”
“It’s a relief. It’s a very good feeling to win… but it’s more like a relief. Everyone expected us to win. From ourselves, we were very confident we can win everything in Europe. Now we did it. So, it’s nice. And it gives us a lot of confidence going to the internationals.”
Game 1
This game was a definition of back-and-forth. At some point, it looked like Fnatic were going to close it successfully and prove their competitive power. They got a money advantage. They got significantly more kills. But G2 thought differently! They managed to break the pace of their opponents and recovered in terms of gold and items. Not everything went smoothly for them, though. Fnatic had their periods of dominance. But eventually, G2 tore Fnatic’s base apart, slew the Elder Dragon, won a team fight, and destroyed the Nexus. G2 Esports won the longest game of LEC Season Finals 2024: 51 minutes.
Game 2
Fnatic started Game 2 actively. They went ahead with kills, but G2 managed to earn more gold. After some time, the action became slower. But then Fnatic won a team fight near a Dragon, secured this objective, and got Baron. This brought them a slight money advantage and a destroyed Inhibitor on G2’s base. After one more Baron a bit later, Fnatic repeated their siege attempt, eliminated the entire G2, and with only two players left on their side, destroyed the Nexus.

Game 3
Both teams made interesting changes during the draft period. G2 took Azir, who is often banned on the pro scene, and eventually, it worked well for them. Fnatic took Corki away from Caps for the first time in this series.
The early game was strong for Fnatic. However, G2 chose to be thorough in their champion development and collecting objectives. They eliminated the disadvantage, reached an even situation in kills, and got a small gold advantage. After a super successful team fight, they just invaded Fnatic’s base and destroyed their Nexus.
Game 4
In a way, this game reflected the general competition between G2 Esports and Fnatic. First, Fnatic looked quite promising. The starting period brought them great moments and some hope. Then G2 struck back with clever positioning and skillful play. They developed their strength slowly and steadily. When the moment came, G2 initiated a massive team fight, won it, and destroyed the Nexus — to win the series and the whole of LEC Season Finals 2024.

G2 Esports vs Fnatic: Competition beyond the LEC
These teams know each other very well thanks to so many matches. Usually, G2 win. Just take a look at their regional titles in 2024. G2 Esports are champions in all three splits. In the Spring and Summer ones, they defeated Fnatic in the grand finals. In the LEC Winter 2024 split, they did it in the semifinals.
The dominance is not that prominent recently. Fnatic won the upper-bracket final of the Summer split and sent G2 to the lower brackets.
G2 has been playing on the verge recently. They need to clutch and perform reverse sweeps to actually win matches. In the LEC Season Finals 2024, they fell to the lower brackets after the opening match against MAD Lions KOI. They sure defeated these opponents in the lower-bracket final in G2 vs MDK, but it’s not the champion play the fans are used to.
International League of Legends esports scene
G2 Esports have been performing much better than Fnatic on the international scene. They reached the top 4 at the Esports World Cup 2024 and the MSI 2024 while Fnatic were at the top 8 at both of those tournaments.
While watching these teams at the LEC events, the fans are divided. But beyond the home region, everyone just wants an LEC team to win. Considering that the League of Legends World Championship is arriving in less than a month, these matches have a meaning beyond the LEC scene as well.
World Championship 2024 starts on Sept. 25 with its Play-In stage. For League of Legends news and updates, stick around on esports.gg.
