League of Legends Season 2024 is here, and with it dozens of new additions to LoL for the upcoming season including new champions, ranked changes, esports changes, and more!

It's 2024 and it's time for some changes to League of Legends as Riot Games reveals details on what to expect this coming year. In a detailed video breaking down much of what we can expect in 2024, Riot Games outlined the new champions, new VGUs, ranked changes, game changes, new skins and more to expect from LoL in 2024. Here's everything announced for League of Legends Season 2024 (LoL Season 14).

Ranked Improvements

Ranked is one of the most frustrating and compelling parts of League of Legends, and in their “Look Ahead” video, Riot Games stated that they want to change the way Ranked works in League of Legends Season 2024. Their big focuses are apparently:

  • Removing disparity in ranks within Ranked games
  • Preventing players from losing more LP for a loss than they earn for a gain
  • Expanding the improvements made last year with the introduction of Emerald Tier

Smolder, League of Legends’ new dragon champion who’s flying onto the rift for 2024. This Spyro look-alike is adorable, and will be playfully making Summoner’s Rift his home soon.

Shyvana VGU

Riot isn’t dragon its feet with the updates this year, with League of Legends' most-neglected dragon getting some love. Yes, Shyvana has been a part of LoL for decades, but despite being a champion that pioneered the Jungle position, she’s really not had much love for a long time. Now Shyvana is due a VGU that should revitalize the once fiery queen of the jungle into a viable champion once more. Maybe it’ll even lure Saintvicious out of retirement!

Skarner Rework

Perhaps Riot Games works on an alphabet system, because Skarner is also getting an update this year. Most prominently they took some of his legs and gave him two more tails. But this is a full rework so Skarner will also see gameplay changes to update his identity. We assume he’ll still be able to grab people and drag them around though.

Ambessa Medarda

If there’s one thing Noxus doesn’t lack for, its badasses. And in a nation where Darius and Draven hail from, Arcane’s Ambessa Medarda still managed to come across like the most deadly badass in the country. The Noxian General will make her way into League of Legends for 2024.

Arcane Season 2 preview

Speaking of Arcane, Season 2 is on the way, and is set to land in November. We won’t go into too much detail here, as we’ve dedicated a whole article to this incredible new trailer, but safe to say we, and the whole League community (or just stray Arcane fans who don’t even play LoL) are ready for this one.

Updated champion mastery

Champion Mastery has been one of the best ways for players to show off their mains and their abilities. But Riot Games feels there’s room for improvement. They're uncapping Champion Mastery, meaning you can show off your master well beyond level 11. We’re eagerly awaiting the first level 9999 Champion mastery.

Arena improvements

Arena mode was tested last year as a featured mode, but the 2v2v2v2 mode was retired for tweaks and changes. It’s returning in League of Legends Season 2024 better than ever, with more experimentation and more variance. We’re not sure how the community will like it, but we’re excited to see it.

A new game mode

URF (Ultra Rapid Fire) is coming back, as is the popular All-For-One mode, but Riot is being tight-lipped on the newest game mode they’re adding. All they would say is that it’ll be a bit chiller than Arena (Although given that there are ARAM sweats, we don’t know if there’s such thing as a “chill” LoL game mode).

New anti-cheat

No one likes cheating. Except cheaters we suppose. Anyway, Riot says it’s going to improve it’s anti-cheat for League of Legends Season 2024. Anti-cheat is an arms race and obviously it’s better they do something than don’t, but its hard to get excited about changes like this. Being in matches with cheaters sucks, but it’s perhaps a testament to the anti-cheat that it’s not more wide spread. So they're adding Vanguard, the VALORANT anti-cheat. Good for LoL we guess.

New skins

Of course there’s new skins. There’s some upcoming for the Luna New Year, as well as a new skin line called Primal Ambush. These skins look monstrous, and evoke a pre-historic vibe. We think we also spotted a Lux skin or 12 in the previews, so good for those Lux mains!

Esports news

There’s a lot of changes to LoL esports:

  • LPL, LCK, LEC, and LCS are getting three base slots at Worlds 2024. Which means at least LCS teams will be able to share the shuttle back to the airport.
  • There’s new ways to earn additional slots apparently, while the other “minor” regions will still have their same slots.
  • MSI is heading to Chengdu, China this May
  • Worlds 2024 is heading to Paris for two stages, and worlds will last from Sep. 24 until Nov.2
  • A new “Hall of Legends” for legendary players, a hall of fame for the LoL greats.

What is LoL Season 2024?

League of Legends Season 2024 is actually the fourteenth season of League of Legends, S14. Season 13 of LoL was extended due to the large changes it added in 2023. Season 13 is actually set to end on Jan. 9, 2024.
