G2 Esports achieved many things with their win against FlyQuest in Worlds 2025: they broke the NA curse and qualified for the quarterfinals.

As Isaac "Azael" Cummings-Bentley brought up on broadcast, it has been six years since G2 beat an NA team in a best-of series. This G2 vs FLY matchup was a chance for them to break the red carpet that NA has rolled out for them over the years.

The last time these two faced off was in the Esports World Cup earlier this year, and G2 took the win in a best-of-one. However, the most recent best-of series between the two happened at the 2025 Mid-Season Invitational, where FlyQuest swept G2 3-0.

G2 is known for its glory days, and fans frequently bring up the greatness of the team in 2019 when the team won MSI. Now, though, they have been unable to find consistent showings internationally despite having strong showings in the LEC.

Both teams sit in the 2-1 group, which means a Western team is guaranteed a top-8 finish, no matter what. G2 is coming as the first seed of the LEC, while FLY is here as LTA's top representative.

Historically, G2 has never been able to beat FlyQuest, as they hold a 0-3 record against them. However, G2 has a positive winrate against NA as a region with a 15W-13L record.

Game 1 - Craps appears

This game began quietly. Rasmus "Caps" Winther claimed first blood almost 12 minutes in. When he did, though, the action finally began. Caps proceeded to die three times in a row, handing over the Feat of Warfare to FlyQuest. Eventually, they claimed the whole Feats of Strength bonus.

FLY continued to press the attack in the mid-game and punished G2 whenever they extended too far or straggled away from the rest. Big fights didn't look any different either, and the LTA's top seed was getting advantages one after another.

Caps wasn't allowed to get a kill past his first one. Sam "Kobe" Hartman-Kenzler said it best on the desk: "that's the name of this game: 'kill Caps!'" FlyQuest dismantled G2 completely in game 1, and the EU team spent over 20 minutes just taking it to the jaw.

Game 2 - Soracan't

Alan "Busio" Cwalina locked in Soraka to counter the lovers duo on the enemy team. This was mostly effective, but Rudy "SkewMond" Semaan exerted a lot of pressure on the map. SkewMond, to redeem himself from his game 1 performance, put G2 Esports on his back and carried them through the midgame.

The NA team was unrelenting, though, and managed to get Atakhan through sheer will and determination. On the other hand, G2 still looked like they lacked the determination and proactiveness, even if they held the lead now.

Busio's heals allowed FlyQuest to last in fights longer than they should have, but G2 took the win nonetheless and pushed the series to game 3.

Game 3 - Craps out, Claps in

Another unexpected pick for this game - SkewMond on Dr. Mundo. Once in-game, neither team wanted to give up space, resulting in traded kills and pressure across the map.

The first meaningful lead in the game went to G2, accumulated through picking stray FLY members and maneuvering teamfights better. G2's superior play allowed them to claim the Rift Herald, Atakhan, and control of the map.

From here, it was a landslide for G2.

Fight after fight went to them, but they did allow FlyQuest to come back a little bit and take the Baron. At the end, Caps' Shockwave found them all, and G2 locked their identity as the first European team to enter top 8 since Rogue did it in 2022. They also ended their dreadful losing streak against FlyQuest and the North American region.

They join Hanwha Life Esports in the top 8, while FlyQuest will have to battle it out in a do-or-die in the 2-2 pool of Swiss Stage in Worlds 2025.
