Vice President Kamala Harris has officially joined Twitch

Vice President and Democratic nominee for President Kamala Harris has launched a Twitch account. This means that both major party nominees for the 2024 US Presidential election now have accounts on the platform. Mr Trump's account was unbanned on the platform in July.

It's currently unclear when Vice President Harris will make her first stream on the platform. It's likely her channel will mostly be used for broadcasts of her campaign events over the next few months. Tonight Kamala Harris will accept the Democratic nomination for President. It is expected that speech could well be her first Twitch stream.

Kamala Harris joining Twitch is the latest in an ongoing trend of internet culture playing a larger role in the 2024 Presidential election. As well as Donald Trump being unbanned back in July he has also collaborated with internet infulencers like xQc and Adin Ross as part of his campaign.

Kamala Harris has also leaned heavily into internet culture. She has jumped on a raft of trends, including 'Brat Summer'. Several of her past speeches and appearances have been all over the internet.

Kamala Harris broadcasting campaign events on Twitch could help reach younger voters. Two thirds of Twitch users are aged under 35, with only 31% 18-29 year olds using cable TV in America. The majority instead use streaming services. Traditionally, candidates used TV advertising and news coverage to reach voters. But, those adverts don't appear on streaming services and those platforms don't carry live news.

That makes platforms like Twitch, YouTube, Tiktok and more crucial in a campaign for President of the United States. However, this is also an attempt to engage with younger voters who often vote in lower numbers than other age groups.

Kamala Harris has been the Vice President of the United States since January 2021. She announced she was running for President in July, after current President Joe Biden announced he was no longer running for the office himself. She has previously ran for President once before, back in 2019.

If you've seen Kamala Harris before she joined Twitch, it was probably in the form of a meme. She has had several viral moments across her campaigns. From "The Wheels on the Bus go round and round", "We did it Joe" to "Did you just fall out of a Coconut Tree" she has become something of an internet sensation on TikTok.

This has included a wide range of remixes to songs from Charli XCX's album, Brat.

Perhaps now Kamala Harris is on Twitch, we might get some more viral moments between now and election day in November.
