Sony has raised the PS5’s price in several regions due to inflation and currency shifts. Meanwhile, the PS5 Disc Drive just got a sizable discount.
In a move that caught many off guard, the PS5 price increase 2025 has officially gone live across multiple regions. Sony shared the news on April 13, 2025, citing “a challenging economic environment” as the main reason.
According to an official PlayStation blog post published just one day before the change went live, the company pointed to high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates as the trigger behind what it called a “tough decision". The price changes will go into immediate effect from April 14, 2025.
"With a backdrop of a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates, SIE has made the tough decision to raise the recommended retail price (RRP) of the PlayStation 5 console in select markets in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Australia and New Zealand. Disc Drive for PS5 price decrease up to 30%

It wasn't all bad news however, as Sony shared the PS5 Disc Drive will see a price drop in the same regions that will see an increase in the cost of certain PS5 Editions.
The PS5 Disc Drive price reduction is fairly substantial, with a 17-33% drop in price for the PlayStation 5 accessory. That said, the accessory is only really relevant for a PS5 Digital Edition user, given it does not come with a Disc Drive.

Bottom line
Whether you're in the market for a new PS5 or considering upgrading to a Digital Edition - believe me it's actually way easier than hunting for the right disc - the cost of entry just got higher in several parts of the world. That said if you're already set on getting a PlayStation 5, you can always account for the price hike by opting for free multiplayer games such as Fortnite, Marvel Rivals or FragPunk.
