"Esports is able to offer all students, regardless of their background, the opportunity to join a team sport."

According to the announcement, the addition of Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee brings esports adoption with Special Olympics to over 50% of the country.

"The innovative collaboration combines students with intellectual disabilities (Special Olympics athletes) and students without intellectual disabilities (Unified partners) on inclusive esports teams," the announcement stated.

The expansion also furthers PlayVS and Special Olympics North America's joint goal of making esports accessible and more inclusive. To both parties, students should have access to the competition, camaraderie, and community offered by scholastic esports.

"Esports is able to offer all students, regardless of their background, the opportunity to join a team sport," head coach Russ Wright from Lake County High School in Tiptonville, TN, said. "Beyond that, it provides a platform to show the world their talent while affording students the chance to be awarded scholarships that fuel a brighter future."

Wright added how a Unified Sports team is the foundation of that belief. "All students should have a stage to excel, display their skills, and participate in a team, forging lasting memories while paving the way for a more promising future," he said.

Additionally, PlayVs noted that the expansion of its league does not impose any financial burden on participating Unified Champion Schools. The platform offers hardware and technical support as needed.

PlayVS and Special Olympics North America's announcement arrived ahead of World Esports Day. Oct. 21 will celebrate competitive gaming by increasing awareness about the positives of esports and raising funds for charities.
