Critical Role DM Matt Mercer is set to voice Vincent Valentine in FF7 Rebirth, coming early next year. Here’s how the announcement went down.

All you filthy emo lovers rejoice! Your king, Vincent, now has a voice actor. Announced earlier today at the New York Comic Con it was revealed that Matt Mercer of Critical Role fame will bring resident man-pire Vincent Valentine to life in FF7 Rebirth. The sequel to 2020's Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Rebirth looks to further expand upon and change this reimagining of Square's most popular RPG. As for Mercer, his portfolio of high-provide voice gigs continues to grow with each passing month.

A known name in the world of anime and video game voice acting, Matt Mercer's increasingly iconic voice has also been used in Baldur's Gate, Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Demon Slayer, Starfield, and more.

The reveal came at an NYCC panel for the FF7 Rebirth project, of which Matt Mercer voiced other non-Vincent characters. Primarily a bit player, Mercer mentions in the talk that, initially, he thought he was coming on to read more NPCs. However, during the audition he said that his screen glitched and blacked out, revealing the lines for everyone's favorite moody coffin man, Vincent.

An optional character in the original Final Fantasy 7, Vincent's fandom has grown both over time and somewhat ironically. The star of the PS2 action-adventure game Dirge of Cerberus, considered one of the worst titles of that PlayStation's era. However, Vincent kept appearing in other media, as well as the Final Fantasy 7 sequel Advent Children.

Matt Mercer takes over voice duties of Vincent from anime luminary Steve Blum, the last to voice him. Will there be any other surprises in store for this next iteration of the project?
