Backyard Baseball ’97 is coming to Steam, with players able to swing for the fences when it releases on October 10.

Backyard Sports announced its comeback near the tail end of August 2024. Now, Megacat Studios and Playground Productions are bringing back a classic title from the series. Backyard Baseball '97 has been announced, and is coming to Steam on October 10.

They updated the game for modern systems with a variety of modes for you to play. There are also global leaderboards and Steam achievements, allowing you to see where you stack up against your friends in terms of home runs, strike outs, and other baseball metrics.

Play like its 1997 as Backyard Baseball '97 arrives on Steam

You can wishlist Backyard Baseball '97 on Steam right now. The release date is October 10, 2024, but at the time of writing, there is no current price point. We'll have to wait until the launch is closer to know how much it costs.

Regardless of that, fans of the Backyard Baseball franchise have to be excited. This is is the first time any game from the Backyard Sports franchise has been added to Steam, and this one should have all the goods of the original.

Game modes and global leaderboard

Backyard Baseball '97 will have classic games modes, including:

  • Random Pick-Up: Jump right in with randomly chosen teams.
  • Single Game: Pick a team, choose from a pool of players, and play through a single game of baseball.
  • Season: Create a team, manage the players, and go through a 14 game season to try and win the Ultra Ground Championship of the Universe.
  • Practice: This one is simple. Practice your fielding or your swing to get the timing right before you take on the challenge of a full season.

In addition to these modes, the game will have a global leaderboard through Steam. In real-time, you can view your statistics compared to friends and other players around the world. Try your hand at slugging the most home runs or be a defensive juggernaut with the most strikeouts.

Backyard Baseball '97 limitations

The team upgrading Backyard Baseball '97 so it can come to Steam has notified players of some limitations. You can see their full statement on the game's Steam description.

The developers do not have the source code to the original Backyard Baseball. Because of that, gamepads and Steam Deck play are not supported. The game also does not run on macOS, so only Windows Steam users can get into the batter's box.
