Is Fortnite free? Or does the popular Battle Royale cost money to play?

The popular video game, Fortnite: Battle Royale, has been around since 2017. With eight years on the market, the game has progressed to new heights that no one could have ever expected. But is Fortnite free to play? Or do you need to purchase the game first?

Is Fortnite free to play?

Whether you are someone looking to begin playing Fortnite or you are a parent with a kid interested in getting into the popular video game, you may be asking yourself: "Is Fortnite free to play?"

Yes, Fortnite is free to play! This goes for every console, too. Whether you play on PC, Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation or your mobile device, Fortnite is completely free to download and play.

This opens an endless world of possibilities for those looking to play Fortnite, as the game has thousands of maps in Creative ontop of the regular Battle Royale, Zero Build and OG modes. There is even LEGO Fortnite, which is just like Minecraft but with LEGOs, and Lego Racing. This gives players the opportunity to pave their own way, creating towns, storylines and more.

In-game micro transactions

Despite the game being free to download and play, Fortnite is constantly adding additional content that needs to be paid for. However, none of this content affects gameplay. No game mode is pay-to-play in Fortnite, which is very heartening. The issue, though, is that the game is constantly releasing new skins and more that people want, littering the game with microtransactions, which are transactions inside a game.

The great part about these? Well, it keeps the game free but allows players to express themselves however they want and choose to spend their money. The issue? Spending $10 here and there can really add up, making players spend far more than they would if the only purchase they needed to make was to buy the game.

BattlePass and Collaborations

The best way to solve this is to purchase a BattlePass, which runs for 2-3 months and gives a big collection of different cosmetics and items to unlock. Purchasing individual skins in the Fortnite Shop in comparison, can quickly become very costly.

With so many collaborations, such as skins from Marvel, Star Wars, Disney, DC, different animes and more in the game, it is quite obvious why people would want to spend a lot of money on microtransactions in Fortnite. Items in Fortnite are purchased using V-Bucks, an in-game currency unique to Fortnite.

Want to purchase skins in Fortnite? All you have to do is buy V-Bucks, whether it is online or in-store, and then redeem them within the game.

Since its release in 2017, the game has broken various records amongst the gaming and entertainment community. With its player base constantly reaching new heights, the game has objectively stolen the spotlight in the world of video games for years now.

But, why is it so popular? Well, there are quite a few reasons. First off, the game excels at content. With many different weapons, skins, emotes and more in the game, it is incredibly easy to make fun and informative content out of the game.

Fortnite has created some of the world's largest influencers in the world, including Ninja, SypherPK and more, which have helped skyrocket the game.

Fortnite also excels at nostalgia and bringing back old players. The game's OG modes constantly bring back players from the past, always pushing the game's player base to new levels.

The game is constantly changing and adding new updates, making it fresh each season and chapter. Fortnite will live on for quite some time.
