Proximity chat will soon find its way into Fortnite Battle Royale after launching in creative maps one year ago!
Of all the possibilities in Fortnite over the years, proximity chat in core game modes is something that never materialized. Players can enable the setting in specific creator-made experiences, but never in modes like Battle Royale. However, that wait will soon come to an end, according to recent leaks.
During the Fortnite Chapter 6 Season 4 downtime period, various Fortnite leakers revealed that Epic Games plans to introduce proximity chat into Battle Royale. Here's everything we know so far.
Leaks indicate proximity chat is coming to Fortnite BR
This information arrived via Wensoing and Loolo_WRLD, who reported that proximity chat is coming to Fortnite Battle Royale. Although we don't have a release date, it will presumably launch soon based on the information surfacing during the game's most recent downtime.
According to the intel, players will have the option to toggle proximity chat on or off as needed. Beyond that, it's unclear what else this option has in store for players or how Epic Games plans to monitor chat.

Will there be safeguards in place for this new feature?

The most significant concern that will emerge is whether Epic Games will have the ability to monitor the new setting. Anyone who has experienced games with proximity chat has likely encountered some semblance of insults and profanity. The environment can become toxic at times, which could be the case in a game like Fortnite.
Unfortunately, we won't know until Fortnite officially announces the feature. It could become a situation where the game flags certain spoken words and bans players accordingly. Given Fortnite's younger age demographic, parents and guardians would be wise to keep proximity chat off.
It's unclear when this setting will land in Fortnite, but we expect to hear more soon.
